Even before the 2026 New Mexico Legislative Session officially begins, far-left lawmakers have moved to prefile what gun-rights advocates are calling the most sweeping anti-firearms proposal in state history.
According to a press release issued this week by the New Mexico Shooting Sports Association, an omnibus gun control measure has been prefiled in the Senate, sponsored by Democrat Sen. Bill O’Malley, Sen. Peter Wirth, Sen. Heather Berghmans, and Rep. Andrea Romero. Its contents are already drawing sharp backlash from Second Amendment supporters across the state.
Zac Fort, legislative director for NMSSA, warned that the proposal represents a dramatic escalation in gun control efforts by Democrats who already hold commanding majorities in both chambers of the Legislature.
“This bill isn’t about public safety,” Fort said in the organization’s statement. “It’s about control — and about restricting lawful gun ownership for everyday New Mexicans.”
The prefiled legislation would enact a broad slate of new prohibitions and mandates, many of which gun-rights advocates say mirror policies pushed by national gun-control organizations rather than reflecting New Mexico’s rural, hunting-oriented culture.
Among the most controversial provisions, the bill would ban the sale of semi-automatic rifles — a category that includes many of the most commonly owned firearms in the country. It would also prohibit the sale of magazines capable of holding more than 10 rounds, further restricting equipment that is currently legal under both state and federal law.
In addition to outright bans, the proposal would create a state-level database of firearm transactions conducted through federally licensed firearms dealers (FFLs), raising significant privacy and constitutional concerns.
One particularly contentious provision would require FFLs to immediately report to the state whenever an individual purchases more than one firearm within a five-day period — effectively expanding gun-owner monitoring and creating what critics describe as a backdoor registry.

Wow! Just wow! Gotta love ABQ and sandy fe.
You can thank Bloomberg for it.
From the article comments - [NM Democrat Senator] Martin Heinrich proposed most of these anti gun measures. The Round House is doing another cut and paste using his ideas.
The New Mexico Shooting Sports Association (NMSSA) is urging New Mexicans to engage directly with legislators once the bill is formally introduced. Rather than relying on pre-written form emails, the organization recommends that constituents write personalized messages, noting that mass emails are increasingly filtered out or ignored.
So, Illinois’ current laws. I’m sorry, NM.
As much as I love NM, I could never live there again. And, likely the pre filled form letters go to the spam folder these days.
Why Dirksen was right.
New Mexico used to be pretty good on 2A issues. I guess it’s been Californicated.
Sounds like Maryland.
The Dims here in Virginia will do the same in a few days when Spamburger takes over.
Definitely NOT the NM I was raised in off and on. 1946-1977.
Interesting we rarely had school shootings back before the 1968 gun control Act became law.
Guns were more available then as you could get a gun at a gas station, pawn shop, hardware store, clothing store, record shop, book store, liquor store, feed store, grocery store. They were everywhere! Cash and carry. No background check, no waiting period, no paperwork. No ID, Just look old enough.
Or you could drop a check in the mail and one would be shipped to your door.
So what has happened since then to cause a change in the morals in the USA where everyone with a gripe has to have his vengeance for past wrongs, most of which are only in his head?
I would blame the mass shootings on closing down the mental institutions in the 1970s. Almost every shooter would have been considered mentally ill and locked up back in the 1960s BEFORE they went on a killing spree.
Starting in 1962 with the demand of Dems Thomas J. Dodd and Emanuel Celler...
1962 We ONLY want to register handguns. Rifles will not be affected!
1964, We ONLY want to register ALL firearms, not ban them.
1968 We ONLY want to register all guns, and ban the import of foreign Saturday Night Specials, and 5-shot bolt action army surplus rifles! (they got the ban).
1970, We ONLY want to ban small American handguns. Rifles will not be affected!
In 1976, the founder of handgun Control Inc told in a New Yorker interview his goal was to make ownership of all handguns “TOTALLY ILLEGAL”.
1976 We ONLY want to ban ALL handguns! Rifles will not be affected!
1981, Actress Lee Grant on Good Morning America screams and pokes holes in the air with her finger...”THE NRA IS A RIFLE ORGANIZATION! THEY SHOULD GIVE UP THEIR HANDGUNS AND THEY CAN KEEP THEIR RIFLES!”
1984, They came for the rifles.
Since they are trying to ban the sale of these items, just give them away for a donation or better yet just for tips, which would not be taxable.

We also started taking God out of our schools and the public Square in the 1950s and 1960s. Between the mental cases walking around amongst us and the general lack of morality, you get what we have in society today.
I fully understand those two 100-year-old British veterans who are publicly saying that it wasn’t worth it for them and their compatriots to fight World War II to stave off the Nazis, when their own countryman are turning their country to garbage. We are not far behind.
Semi-Auto Ban,10 round mags and
