Trump’s property developer persona must salivate at getting the hugest property deal ever. The mini-continent of Greenland is likely worth many trillions of dollars in natural resources and development potential.
Cagey negotiator Trump speaks of buying Greenland from Denmark for a few billion dollars, a typical, low-ball opening bid. Trump knows the USA is by far the best custodian for Greenland. And, its acquisition would address our serious security concerns about Russian and Chinese aggression in the Arctic.
The European Union and NATO want to leverage Denmark’s current colonial “ownership” of Greenland into a European asset. We can evaluate a Greenland acquisition on two criteria:
1. What arrangement will provide Greenland, and the USA, with the best protection from predator nations?
2. What arrangement will give Greenlanders the best economic rewards and political arrangement?
Disappointingly for Greenlanders, their desire to be an independent nation of 58,000 people on a very large, very rich, piece of real estate will not happen.
Greenland is coveted by powerful neighbors who want to control Greenland. The best Greenlanders can hope for is a good deal that protects their culture, provides good government, and gives them a really, really good share of the potential wealth. On this basis, the USA is by far the best protector for their future.
Fortunately, Greenlanders are already steeped in Western culture. Indigenous livelihoods and practices continue, but, about 85% of them are Protestant Lutherans, according to their church’s leader. They aren’t primitive Eskimos living off fishing. And, Denmark, the island’s current overlord, has a sorry history with indigenous Greenlanders.

[EXCERPT]
During the 1960s and 70s thousands of Inuit women and girls as young as 12 were fitted with contraceptive devices, as part of a birth-control programme administered by Danish doctors.
[snip]
Records from the national archives showed that, between 1966 and 1970, 4,500 women and girls, some as young as 13, had an IUD implanted.
Of these, it is unclear how many cases lacked consent. However, dozens of women have come forward sharing traumatic personal accounts and some were left sterile.
[END EXCERPT]
Given that Denmark’s stewardship of Greenland is blighted by racist cruelty, Greenlanders are likely to reject continued control by Denmark.
Greenlanders’ choice boils down to Europe or the USA. Denmark is much too small to go it alone, though they may get a prominent role and rewarding arrangement with Europe or the USA.
Maybe he will, but we’re going to get Greenland no matter what.
another reminder: per the Constitution, this will have to be approved by Congress, so it’s not just a Trump thing.
There have been polls lately that show the people in Greenland do not want to be owned by the US. How dare a President of the US say they would take Greenland by force! That would make the president no better than Putin. Trump would kill people to take Greenland?
Denmark has already said that the US could put military bases in Greenland. If Trump would take over an Island, then he would not blink at taking over a State or City.
I don’t believe that such killings are what this Country is about. Trump talks about the deaths in Ukraine and Russia being too much. Yet he is willing to kill humans to take over Greenland.
I dont know what ‘get Greenland’ means.
The U.S. maintains one primary military installation in Greenland: Pituffik Space Base, formerly known as Thule Air Base, located on the northwest coast. Operated by the U.S. Space Force, it’s a crucial outpost for missile warning, space surveillance, and defense operations for the U.S. and NATO, supporting the 1951 Greenland Defense Agreement.
Do we need to ‘get Greenland’ in order to augment or add critical military defenses? Seems like a modified or new mutual defense agreement would suffice.
It means make Greenland part of the United States before China makes it part of China.
We can easily buy them off. I think Trump is thinking of $100,000 per person.
Thats vague. Greenland is no more interested in being part of China or Russia than it is joining the US as a state or territory.
I am not against the idea of Greenland as a US protectorate, but not forced. If Trump can offer a deal/buyout and Greenlanders like it, great. Why make it a grudge match? On the other hand if China or Russia tried to ‘force’ acquisition, sure, we defend it.
I just dont see why we want to look the bully in this case. Venezuela sure. Cuba, sure. Those were/are hostile regimes, and in our hemisphere.
For the China threat, I think its sufficient just to make clear to China they need to bugger off.
Yup.
Why do we need to “get” it?
From a security standpoint, the US has agreements with Denmark AND Greenland that allow us to have as many bases on the island as we want.
The only other issue (and the only REAL issue) us exploiting its mineral riches.
WE CAN DO THAT WITHOUT ABSORBING GREENLAND. It’s simply a matter of paying up for mining concessions.
I’d rather have Freeport and Hecla and Peabody and MP Materials spend their billions to acquire these underground assets than the US taxpayer.
(For that matter, I’d prefer Chevron, Exxon, etc., to invest in Venezuelan petro infrastructure than our Treasury.)
Please keep still. It will be either the USA, Russia, or China that will dominate Greenland, you pick...
I have pondered Trump’s motives on Greenland and the only thing I can come up with that checks all the boxes is that Trump will seek dissolution from NATO, so that the offer for Greenland is a subtle ‘give it to us now on friendly terms or beg us to take it later when the Russians or Chinese are on your doorstep’ message.
He doesn't need to buy the island... just the votes of those on the island.
It’s a key part of Trrm-Hegserh strategy of moving to hemispheric defense.
In my view acquiring Greenland is a necessity. If we don’t, someone will “acquire it” who we don’t want to have that close to us.
Through a juxtaposition of charm, bluff, and a high degree of unpredictability, Trump has proven he can get to “Yes” in many negotiations that for others would prove fruitless.
To watch him perform is a most magnificent kind of theater. Even when we don’t see all the moving parts.
The US already *has* a base in Greenland — Pituffik (formerly known as Thule).
We used to have more, but they closed with the end of the Cold War not because Greenland or Denmark demanded it, but rather, because the costs to maintain such bases was incredibly high.
If the US wishes re-open closed bases or build new ones, it does not take threats to do so: It merely requires asking.
Europe (Denmark included) are willing to commit suicide rather than facilitate Bad Orange Man™ and his evil, fascist world takeover.
