Impotent, useless Britain is the weakest it has been for 500 years
The Telegraph ^ | 07 January 2026 | 07 January 2026

Civilisational decline happens slowly at first, and then all at once. Britain has not been this weak and irrelevant on the global stage since the early 1500s; France and Germany are facing equally severe existential crises.

It took Donald Trump to call our bluff, exposing our impotence and insignificance to a world we once dominated. British and European politicians cannot stop Trump from buying Greenland, or kidnapping Latin American tyrants, or taking out the Mullahs’ evil nuclear programme, or sanctioning Left-wing international judges, or doing whatever else he wants.

Eighty-one years after the end of the Second World War, the Western European era is finally over, killed off by welfarism, egalitarianism, risk aversion, demographic failure, over-regulation, environmentalism, pacifism and self-hatred. Britain self-sabotaged by wantonly downsizing our military, promoting rent-seeking above wealth creation, embracing “soft power” and net zero and turning against our core values.

We willingly demoted ourselves from being America’s junior partner to vassal status. We sought to camouflage our uselessness by preaching about “human rights” and weaponising international law; that delusion too has been punctured.

Trump is often spectacularly right (as with Tehran) and often disastrously wrong (as when he threatens Canada or is soft on Putin) but never before have we had so little leverage over America. The Trump administration is just not interested: Western Europe has almost nothing to offer, for the first time in centuries.

In an era of advanced technology, AI, space exploration, hard military power, energy supremacy and renewed ideological warfare, we are nowhere to be seen. The US is now the world’s biggest oil producer; Silicon Valley, Wall Street and the Pentagon’s military-industrial complex are crushingly superior to every Western rival, and the gap keeps getting wider.

No mention in the article of Britain's willful cultural/demographic suicide?

Britain, like much of Europe, won’t be great again unless and until it reverts to Christianity. Liberal secularism has been tried for 100+ years, and it failed, okay?

About as close as it comes, otherwise he will get a cop knock and arrested for mean words.

It's probably too late for that.

LOL. Why will Portugal be spared? (I’m not knocking them. I happen to love the country).

I could not get past the Pay Wall...

No mention of the total collapse of the UK Conservative Party, either, in the posted segment.

They literally betrayed Margaret Thatcher in 1990, and now they have betrayed the entire country.

They literally betrayed Margaret Thatcher in 1990, and now they have betrayed the entire country.

Her successors were Labour Lite. So voters gave up and allowed Labour to win in the recent election.

Notice how warped their world view, even when recognizing their own weakness:
“cannot stop Trump from:”
“buying Greenland”. Can’t fault them for that, Europeans should stick together.

“or kidnapping Latin American tyrants” what is wrong with that? What a warped mindset.

“or taking out the Mullahs’ evil nuclear programme”
The Europeans are complaining that we saved their hide from nuclear war, and stopped the war in the Middle East?

“or sanctioning Left-wing international judges” Thank you Trump!

“or doing whatever else he wants.” Yes, what he wants is in the interest of the USA, and as it’s allies the EU should be supporting whatever else he wants.

It is sad that the UK has turned into an adversary, and it can no longer be trusted as an ally.

“About as close as it comes, otherwise he will get a cop knock and arrested for mean words.”

Exactly, “self-hatred” and “turning against our core values” is the rest of the circumlocution.

How can the West go back to religion, the Church or whatever after being secular for so long? The spiritual was killed when Friedrich Nietzsche said so.

How can an ignorant mass of Christians in name only find God again and cling to those essential values? How can these masses use religion as bulwark against aggressive Islam?

Yes this is the essence. The fact that the author conspicuously avoids it is proof of the Brits’ blindness and cluelessness about their plight.

England, where murders and rapists get less time in prison than someone who might insult them on social media.

Wow. What a bold and honest article.

The UK has “public order” offenses, one of which is causing a person alarm or distress. This article will certainly cause Labour and Tories alike alarm and distress.

I wonder when the Telegraph offices will be raided.

@jomickane

This is disgusting, they said it would only be for terminally ill patients.
Labours Lord Falconer saying that if a person wants an assisted death because they are living in poverty, they shouldn’t be refused just because they are poor.... as long as its their own decision.... shameful 🤬🤬
