Politics ‘Greenland belongs to its people’: European leaders unite over Trump’s threats to annex territory

European leaders on Tuesday issued a joint statement to push back against U.S. President Donald Trump’s renewed interest in Greenland, saying security in the Arctic must be achieved collectively.

“The Kingdom of Denmark – including Greenland – is part of NATO,” the statement said, according to a letter published by Denmark’s Prime Minister’s Office on X.

“Security in the Arctic must therefore be achieved collectively, in conjunction with NATO allies including the United States, by upholding the principles of the UN Charter, including sovereignty, territorial integrity and the inviolability of borders. These are universal principles, and we will not stop defending them,” they continued.

“Greenland belongs to its people. It is for Denmark and Greenland, and them only, to decide on matters concerning Denmark and Greenland.”

The letter was signed by Danish Prime Minister Mette Frederiksen, French President Emmanuel Macron, German Chancellor Friedrich Merz, British Prime Minister Keir Starmer, as well as the leaders of Italy, Spain and Poland.

The coordinated message, which also described the U.S. as “an essential partner” in the push for Arctic security, comes as Trump once again sets his sights on the vast, mineral-rich and sparsely populated territory.

The U.S. president, who has long advocated for control over the self-governing Danish territory, told NBC News on Monday that he was “very serious” with his intent to acquire Greenland. Trump also said he had “no timeline” for doing so, however.

Alarm bells have been ringing in Denmark, which is responsible for the defense of Greenland, given that Trump’s remarks follow Washington’s major military operation in Venezuela.

collectively

There is that dirty word again. I think we can all agree it should have been retired with the 20th Century.

I don’t understand what Trump thinks he is getting with his comments on Greenland. It appears that he is just antagonizing an ally without any benefit. Same with his comments on Canada. He “trolled” Canada and it helped keep the Liberals in power.

Trump sees an increasing “tide” of Russian and Chinese maritime influence in the vicinity of Greenland.

As a result, he is publicly giving the Danes an “F” and is saying that by comparison the Americans, if we were in charge, would be giving the baddies hell.

Everything is a negotiation.

Then why does Denmark have a claim to it?

So what will they “collectively“ do when China or Russia makes a move on Greenland?

Canada and it helped keep the Liberals in power.“

Which keeps them weak. Everything Trump says and does is intended to help our country. Getting Greenland or even access to her assets is extremely beneficial for us. It is just sitting for the taking by someone.

Anyone remember Bush ‘41 saving Kuwait? The country ordered a bunch of Airbus planes instead of Boeing-gratitude.

Fine.
Please Denmark and England.

Lay out Greenland’s defense plan for refusing China “ commercial” access to build ports, airfields, mines, and “ communication stations” that will turn into military access that threatens the ability to maintain OTH early warning of a missile strike on North America. Also to prevent the Chinese navy and air force from becoming a presence in and over the North Atlantic, and the Arctic polar cap where China is longing to become a resource competitor along with US, Canada, Europe and Russia. Oh. And Russia. Isnt NATO’s next big faceoff in the Arctic?

China likes fish…has lots of people to feed…how about if they start raping the fisheries of the Atlantic…they are not known as environmentalists.

Denmark, How many dog sled teams can you commit?

England remind us of when your Carriers can actually leave the dock.
But then, theres always the Canadian Air Force eh?

Given what we now know about NATO and our so-called European allies, Greenland is a necessity.

Trump threatening the use of force against Greenland is just embarrassing as hell. And if he "doesn't mean it" and doesn't want anyone else to believe he means it, then why the hell even say it?

When Democrats say stupid crap about Trump or Republicans, or say something stupid about an issue, do we excuse it with "oh, they were just trolling us and didn't really mean it"? We rightfully hold every leftist to the words they use. We pick them apart, look at their meeting, and hang them for it.

And rightfully so. If you choose to enter the public sphere, then it is reasonable for people to assume that you say what you mean, and you mean what you say. If you don't do that, it is your fault, not theirs, if people take seriously the things you say.

And yes, I'm very well aware of Selena Ziti's statement of "literally, not seriously", And she was absolutely right about how his supporters interpret what he says. But that doesn't change the fact that other nations are entitled to take the things the President says both literally and seriously. Because that's what you do with leaders of foreign countries - take them at their word.

Obviously, there are situations where the context makes it clear that the person was joking - like Reagan's "we begin bombing in 5 minutes.". Trump, on the other hand, deliberately cultivates ambiguity when he makes these kind of statements. Does he mean it, or not? But again, when you choose to do that, you cannot blame others for being concerned that this may be one of the times when you actually do mean it.

Trump doesn’t always have the most strategic filter on his comments.

However, here perhaps he is acclimating Americans to the possibility of accepting Alberta into our union once they extricate themselves from Canada and purchasing Greenland from the actual Greenlanders once they vote to separate from Denmark.
