CORPUS CHRISTI, Texas - Jury selection is underway in the trial of former Uvalde Consolidated Independent School District police officer Adrian Gonzales, one of the first officers on the scene of the Robb Elementary mass shooting.
What we know: Jury selection is taking place in Corpus Christi.
Gonzales faces 29 felony counts of abandoning or endangering a child, and has pleaded not guilty.
The charges are classified as state jail felonies, the lowest level of felony under Texas law.
If convicted, Gonzales could face between six months and two years in prison.
Gonzales is the first police officer in Texas to be prosecuted under a statute for allegedly failing to take actinon during an active shooter situation.
...
Former Uvalde Schools Police Chief Pete Arredondo also faces 10 counts of abandoning or endangering a child, each of which carries a punishment of up to two years in jail. He is awaiting trial.
...
19 students and two teachers were killed in the mass shooting at Robb Elementary on May 24, 2022.
...
In 2024, the Department of Justice released a nearly 600-page report detailing the ‘cascading failures’ by law enforcement on May 24, 2022.
Nearly 400 law enforcement officials responded to the campus, but waited for 77 minutes before entering the classroom and confronting the 18-year-old shooter.
...
I have zero confidence this will actually result in a conviction.
Four HUNDRED? What the?? Is this the shooting where the cops held back the parents from entering forcing them to watch the cops stand around and do nothing?
How did this get past qualified immunity? I thought the supreme court has ruled that police are not required to “protect”?
when seconds count - the police are minutes away.
and when they get there there they hide behind their cars and call for backup...
The piggy should also be charged with trying to pin his failings on gun owners and gun manufactures. Lock him up!!!
The officers need to be charged with fraud and forced to pay back their salaries that they earned under false pretenses.
The video of the police officer washing his hands and laughing while they were all staged in a hallway of the school is disgusting.
“Nearly 400 law enforcement officials responded to the campus, but waited for 77 minutes before entering the classroom and confronting the 18-year-old shooter.”
Pathetic, just pathetic. Of that nearly 400 I’m willing to bet over half were combat vets willing to go in and take on the situation but were held back by chickenshit commanders such as Police Chief Pete Arredondo not having any idea what to do despite training for such an incident.
Most criminal is the fact that Uvalde Police Department officer Ruben Ruiz wanted charge into the school to render assistance but was physically restrained by fellow officers from doing so. Ruiz knew full well what was happening as his dying wife in that school was in communication with him. I bet to this day Ruiz just hates all the assholes that held him back.
As I recall, yes.
Yes to your question.
A sad situation all around. The cops were not trained properly and showed no courage in the face of children being shot. Should they be held accountable? I lean towards immunity even in their cowardice just because they weren’t the ones killing kids. But holding back armed parents who were willing to step forward and be real men? Thats not right, and families are destroyed as a result.
I don’t know what their punishment should be, but they should not be cops anymore at the very least. They should have to carry their shame for the rest of their earthly days while making some restitution to society.
Yet to be proven.
“The trial is expected to reveal additional details about the actions of Gonzales and whether prosecutors can prove that his decisions crossed the line from failure into criminal conduct.”
“I bet to this day Ruiz just hates all the assholes that held him back.”
No doubt. Deserved or not, he might hate himself for his actions that day. I hope not. What a burden to carry.
I will never forget that.
I have never seen a bigger bunch of cowards in my life.
It was like watching a bunch of UN Peacekeepers doing their job.
Agree ...... to be paid for years to be on hand to protect and then do nothing when the time comes seems like fraud to me.
All govt weapons should be placed on a long table at the street so parents, cops, or pissed off walkersby can be free to grab something and go in. I understand it’s just a job, no complaint here, but parenting is completely different.
“If you’re gonna cry, just step aside...”
Iron Maiden.
I bet they would have had qualms about shooting a parent who attempted to get past their blockade and into the school to protect their kid.
Nobody on this Earth with a valid man card - with a weapon - can be held back.
Cowards.
I say hammer the cowardly bastards to let the others know their responsibilities.
