Starmer won't be drawn on whether US strikes on Venezuela broke international law
BBC News ^ | 3 January 2026 | Laura Kuenssberg

Sir Keir Starmer has refused to be drawn on whether or not US President Donald Trump's military action against Venezuela may have broken international law.

In an interview with the BBC's Sunday with Laura Kuenssberg programme on Saturday morning, the prime minister did not condemn the US strikes.

He said he was waiting to establish all the facts but would not "shy away from this", adding he was a "lifelong advocate of international law".

Sir Keir earlier said the UK had not been involved in Saturday's large-scale strikes on Venezuela and he had not spoken to Trump about the operation that resulted in the capture of President Nicolas Maduro.

Later on Saturday, the prime minister posted on X that the UK "regarded Maduro as an illegitimate president and we shed no tears about the end of his regime".

"The UK government will discuss the evolving situation with US counterparts in the days ahead as we seek a safe and peaceful transition to a legitimate government that reflects the will of the Venezuelan people," he added.

The government is working with the UK embassy in Caracas to ensure around 500 British citizens in Venezuela are safeguarded and get appropriate advice.

The Foreign Office has advised against all travel to Venezuela, and said any British nationals already living in the country should "shelter in place" or "be prepared to change your plans quickly if necessary".

As part of a wide-ranging interview, the PM was pressed on developments in Venezuela and whether he felt international law had been upheld.

"I want to get all the material facts together, and we simply haven't got the full picture at the moment," Sir Keir told the BBC. "It's fast moving, and we need to piece that together.

Many feel that Starmer’s England could also use a bit of an action to straighten out their horrifying mess....

Sounds like maybe this came as a surprise to Starmer.

Probably Starmer, and no one else. He likes to pretend that the UK is still a great empire. Rule Britannia, and all that.

Right now he’s probably in his room, moving little red wooden blocks around on a map of the world. And he’d rather not be disturbed.

If we’re being honest about it, there is no international law. Not really.

How about the “international law” Maduro repeatedly violated by shipping literal tons of illicit drugs to the United States, with the wilfull intent to cause grave harm to America and its citizens. Do these European fkwads consider that aspect?

Starmer needs to STFU. No one cares what the irrelevant UK has to say.

Is hostile nations sending an invasion force (illegal aliens) a violation of international law?

Sorry, but I’ve got to call this bollocks out.

Literally nobody in the UK (ESPECIALLY NOT THE LEFT) thinks we’re even a minor power, let alone thinks we still “rule the waves”. We’re not even the biggest player in the European side of NATO.

The only people on the left who peddle this crap are the likes of Corbyn who used to holiday in the USSR and Warsaw Pact, and who keep saying so in lockstep with Putin’s Russia (that is still smarting over the Crimean War, and blaming the UK for everything it can).

Brexit turned out to be massively funded by Russia, as part of an attempt to get the UK voice out of Europe... Despite the UK really having no influence on the Benelux/France/Germany positions.

Russia has succeeded. The UK has no influence over the EU, it hasn’t been a powerful voice even inside the Commonwealth for decades, and if we weren’t such a consistent welcome mat for the USA on this side of the Atlantic, the USA would’ve forgotten about us already.

We occasionally deal with countries that are independent, that used to be in the empire. But nobody seriously thinks that’s got anything more to it than having once had a bigger foot in the door.

Farage and others are the closest we’ve got to empire nostalgia, but it’s a pretence. They involve the imagery and emotion of a time when our voice really mattered, but they’d rather we became the 51st state and were run entirely by corporate interests. It’s people like Farage who got rich by offshoring jobs and selling off the national silverware.

Thank you for your detailed response. But please note that I was being sarcastic in my post #5. It’s a common approach here in the states when talking about people in positions of authority.

LR

You’d be surprised how many people actually truly do argue it though!

Even on FR.

But the Russkies are the maddest. Their people cheerfully swallow the stuff about the impotence of the UK one minute, then cheerfully swallow the idea that the British are still the boogeyman in the next minute.

Starmer’s words once again confirm the fact that former relations between the US and the UK, when almost every international act was discussed and aligned with the partner beforehand, have passed into history. Britain is not a great empire anymore. Starmer had better stop pretending it is.
