Trump Says Nobel Laureate Machado Lacks 'Support Or Respect' To Lead Venezuela
News18 ^ | January 03, 2026

US President Donald Trump on Saturday dismissed Nobel Peace Prize-winning opposition leader María Corina Machado as a potential leader of Venezuela, saying she does not have the “support or respect" within the country.

Speaking at a news conference, Trump said, “I think it would be very tough for her to be the leader. She doesn’t have the support within or the respect within the country. She’s a very nice woman, but she doesn’t have the respect."

Machado, who won the Nobel Peace Prize last year, posted on social media that “the hour of freedom has arrived" and called for the opposition’s 2024 candidate, Edmundo Gonzalez Urrutia, to immediately assume the presidency.

However, Trump said the US would instead work with Maduro’s deputy, Delcy Rodriguez, who he claimed is “essentially willing to do what we think is necessary to make Venezuela great again."

Trump also made clear that the US presence in Venezuela is likely to continue until a “proper transition" is in place. He confirmed that American officials and cabinet members would be part of running the country temporarily, saying, “We’re going to be running it with a group. We’re designating people."

I sincerely hope Trump isn’t going to reach backward into the dark ages and try to promote Juan Guaidó.

Guaidó is a socialist who runs or is a leader of the socialist party.

To get rid of a communist and then to install a socialist is worse than foolish.

Maduro had Iranian ‘security’...

His oil props up Cuba... the Chinese are moving into South America. How long did we have?

This is NOT ‘nation building’ in some stone age hellhole global elites want us to control.

This is our neighborhood - we can’t afford to be surrounded.

How long should we have waited?

I doubt the Venezuelan people prefer Delcy Rodriguez to Maria Machado.

There should an election held - supervised and protected from fraud.

??? Trump is spot on.

Also, the United States recognized Edmundo González Urrutia as Venezuela's legitimate president-elect.

Machado may not fully represent US interests

She was a Klaus Schwab/WEF “young leader” for a couple years. The EU has been fawning over her for years. The Nobel Peace Prize award gives her a Davos-smell also

Therefore, Trump likely does not trust her

Just me spit-balling....

Trump will work with the present regime. There will be no US boots on the ground. The current acting president Delcy Rodríguez has seen what has happened to Maduro and will be willing to cooperate. Because they control the military and police they will be able to keep control of the country. As long as they turn over the oil fields to US oil companies and protect those companies they will be allowed to remain in power.
They will be able to be a lot more vicious in controlling Venezuela than US boots on the ground could ever be.
The US will control Venezuela by proxy, elections won’t happen any time in the near future.

When the woman you want to take over says Edmundo should be it, was is your problem?

I have no problem with Trump taking out that communist thug, but his stated reason for doing so was that Maduro was not the legit elected leader of that country. If that is so, then Machado WAS the elected leader, what the hell is wrong with Trump’s mind? Does he think the next in line guy is going to be any different? Not only is this incredibly stupid, it looks just horrific, like Trump whats to put someone in there to be his puppet, and have total control. I did NOT vote for this.
