New York’s far-left mayor-elect, Zohran Mamdani, will be sworn in to office using a Quran at an abandoned subway station.
According to The New York Times, Mamdani will be sworn in at midnight on New Year’s Eve inside a decommissioned subway station beneath City Hall that once served as a turnaround for the No. 5 train.
He said the unconventional setting was chosen for its symbolism, framing the ceremony as the start of what he called “inauguration of a new era.”
“It was a physical monument to a city that dared to be both beautiful and build great things that would transform working peoples’ lives,” Mamdani said in a statement.
“That ambition need not be a memory confined only to our past, nor must it be isolated only to the tunnels beneath city hall: it will be the purpose of the administration fortunate enough to serve New Yorkers from the building above.”
He added that he was “humbled by the opportunity to lead millions of New Yorkers into a new era of opportunity, and honored to carry forward our city’s legacy of greatness.”
The station opened in 1904 as one of the city’s original 28 subway stops and was taken out of service in 1945 amid system upgrades.
It later received landmark status from New York City in 1979 and was added to the National Register of Historic Places in 2004.
New York Attorney General Letitia James is set to administer Mamdani’s initial oath of office, followed by a second ceremony on the steps of City Hall later Wednesday.
That event will include a separate swearing-in by Vermont Senator Bernie Sanders and conclude with a block party along Broadway.
Mamdani, whose politics blend a bizarre brand of Islamism with far-left socialism, will be sworn in using a Quran passed down from his grandfather.
He will also use a separate Quran once owned by Arturo Schomburg, a noted Black author and historian.
For the larger public ceremony at City Hall, Mamdani will instead take the oath on Qurans that belonged to both his grandfather and grandmother.
Following the inauguration, the Quran will go on public view for the first time as part of a special exhibition at the New York Public Library.
The voters of New York City will soon get what they voted for.
I’m back here in Nebraska with my popcorn ready.
Ending with....”So help me Allah!”
Trump doesn’t share your pessimism.
But we shall see…
Why the midnight oath? Is that a tradition in New York?
To conduct this first swearing in at an abandoned, underground subway station, almost seems as though he’s hiding.
“I’m back here in Nebraska with my popcorn ready.”
Just keep your eyes open and disinfectant ready. These viruses can easily cross state boundaries.
Sounds like something a Batman villain would do.
I can’t believe that NYC did this just a couple decades after Muslims killed ~3000 of our citizens.
However, I do not think they got to this point solely via citizens voting. I believe voter fraud was the stepping stones to Mandani being elected.
Its difficult for me to resign to Trump endorsing this guy.
Make sure there are no young children, or other potential sacrifice victims, present at this abandoned subway ritual.
smart to use an abandoned subway station, you can keep the violent subway killers out that way
Come on NYC...we’re counting on you for lots of laughs, being the basis of many great memes and assorted LIB loser nitwitty-ness.
More popcorn!!!
An Islamic oath means nothing. Lying to infidels to gain advantage is explicitly allowed and encouraged in Islamic doctrine.
Exactly so..............
The symbolism, even if it is unintentional, is horrible.
Hidden, dark, underground, anti-Western values, tunnels, (furtive tunneling into the country.)
I wonder if this guy will be invited to Mamdani’s swearing-in ceremony.
Leticia James — How perfectly that completes the dismal scene.
Odd that Mamdani wanted the symbolism of an abandoned subway station. If corporations and people living in New York City abandon it to escape his policies then a lot of places will be abandoned.
The History series on American 20th Century crime bosses had a section of a moving camera slowly passing boarded up buildings in 1975 with long blocks that used to have trendy fashion stores, upscale jewelry stores and entrances to expensive apartments with doormen. Narrator said just before Mayor Rudy Giuliani was elected the city lost so much money in the tax base from high earners moving out it astonishingly was faced with near bankruptcy, unable to sell any city bonds, something that was the result of rampant muggings, rapes and carjackings. His stop, question and frisk soon brought the city back.
Swearing on the Koran is about as meaningful as swearing on a copy of L. Ron Hubbard’s book.
Farcical.
