Ted Nugent Refuses to Renew Driver’s License

Rock musician Ted Nugent has created controversy after saying he refused to renew his driver’s license. Speaking on his YouTube channel, Nugent called the renewal process “stupid” and said it represents pointless bureaucracy.

He explained that he spent nearly 45 minutes trying to follow the instructions before giving up, deciding the system itself was not worth complying with.

“When somebody tells you to do something stupid, don’t do it,” Nugent stated. “I tried to renew my driver’s license. I spent 45 minutes trying to follow their directions. Then I stopped and thought and I left them a message. It was a two syllable message. Could be one word, could be two words, but it was two syllables.”

His Argument Against License Renewal

Nugent believes renewing a license makes no sense if nothing about a person has changed. He argued that his name, photo, address, and license number are still the same, so renewal should not be required.

In his view, a person does not “expire,” and neither does an address. Because of this, he questioned why the government requires people to repeatedly prove the same information.

“I’ve got a driver’s license. And that’s my name, that’s my photo, that’s my address, and that’s my driver’s license number. It’s not expired cuz here I am,” he explained. “The driver’s license, that picture, that’s me, officer. That address is my home officer. I’m not expired. My address is not expired. Why do I renew it? It’s me.”

Criticism of Vehicle Registration

The musician extended his frustration to car registration rules. He said a vehicle’s VIN number does not change and ownership remains the same, so renewing registration feels unnecessary to him. Nugent framed this as an example of people accepting rules without questioning their purpose.

“‘Well, you got to renew your registration for your car.’ No, I don’t. That’s the VIN number. That’s my car. I’m the owner. Nothing’s expired. It hasn’t expired. I’m still here. The car still has the same VIN number. That’s the car. It’s registered. See what we’ve allowed to happen?”

Views on AI and Bureaucracy

Nugent also used the discussion to criticize artificial intelligence in music, arguing that technology can imitate sound but not human emotion or individuality. Overall, his comments showed a greater anger toward systems he sees as encouraging blind obedience, leading to a debate about whether renewal requirements are logical or outdated.

“AI kiss my a—. Artificial intelligence will never be able to play the guitar solo to ‘Journey to the Center of the Mind.’ Oh, it’ll sound like it, but it won’t have those nuances. It won’t have that piss and vinegar. Won’t have that edge. Won’t have the grit from my fingertips.”

“Artificial intelligence will never be able to play the guitar solo to ‘Journey to the Center of the Mind.’ “

Which was totally, totally, absolutely, NOT about psychedelic drugs.

If they’re giving driver’s licenses to illegals who broke the law to come here, one might as well break the law and refuse to renew our own licenses.

He needs to move to AZ.
I ran into the same thing in OR w my motorcycle endorsement.
AZ said “ I see u used to have an endorsement in CA, would you like it added to AZ license?”
Feels good to be treated like adults here!

It makes for a great rant, but it’s a losing argument in court. The Administrative State loves to have this kind of control, and to suck in the revenue stream. People love smaller government until we can’t get the idiots off the roads.

The entire process is a bit stupid. For instance, each time I renew my license, the DMV just uses my photo on file. So my current DL has a picture of me from at least 30 years ago. If I get stopped and show that license I suspect the officer will have questions.

Also, I haven’t moved in the past 40+ years so all my info is the same. They should have a policy that you have to renew your license only if you change your name or address.

They do get that regular fee from me though so I guess that is all that really matters.

No pulling the needle out, Ted.

You should be used to it by now.

He picked a good battle and we can all understand as it hits everybody. Of course renewing every 4 years to update one’s pic is ok. A driving test after a certain age would be appropriate but the written test took 2 attempts for me. They made it more difficult. The motivation is beyond me unless it’s to hold up the illegals.

And the passport renewal is even WORSE. You must mail in the expiring passport AND BE WITHOUT ANY PASSPORT for months.

Time to eliminate this all.

Hard to blame him when half the cars on the road are unlicensed/suspended illegals and blacks driving without valid registration, auto insurance, license plates, tread on their tires, working brakes, smog stickers, handicapped placards, sober, etc.

At some point you start feeling like a chump for playing by the rules.

Until you are stopped and cited for no license and your car is towed. Then you can have the pleasure of paying the ticket and the towing charges.

Ted is already a winner in some ways, b/c he is 77 y/o and still driving period. I am much younger 69.5 yrs, had to stop driving due to eye and foot problems.
I have arranged transport for what’s really important.

Funny the things you miss when not driving.
Micky-Dees/ 711/ Specific hiking trails, arriving pre-dawn and avoiding those territorial Turkeys.

Also an excuse to pull people over and fish.

I was pulled over yesterday by a state trooper heading the opposite direction while I was driving the speed limit. He whipped a U-turn and came flying up behind me—probably pushing 100 mph—just to tell me my tags were expired. Who doesn’t like to be chased down like a criminal? On the rest of my drive, I tested it myself: trying to read plates on cars coming at me or passing by at 55 mph. It’s basically impossible. The officer straight-up lied to me about spotting it visually. If the tags were free you know they would be lifetime tags. Criminal level extortion.

Ted Nugent should propose a ‘license plate revolt’ holiday
