A school bus driver who was terminated after she posted a sign saying student passengers could only speak English said she had not meant to be "racially insensitive."
Diane Crawford, 66, had posted a sign in the window of her bus earlier this year that said: "Out of respect to English-only students, there will be no speaking Spanish on this bus."
Days later, she was informed that her contract with Rohrer Bus had ended. The company had contracted her services to serve the Juniata County School District in Pennsylvania for over a decade.
Crawford told local news station CBS 21 last week that her intention was to create a safe and respectful environment, not to target any group.

If you live in America you should be required to speak English this bull of accommodating every language in the world is pure BS. One nation one language or get out.
Her gambit will prevail. At 66 her retirement funding is assured from the lawsuit proceeds.
She makes a good point. America can’t survive if we accept Balkanization. There should not be store signs, etc. in different languages. Recall the immigrants of 100 years ago (including my grandparents). Most of them tried to learn English as soon as possible.
But she was also very unwise. It’s not her job to set policy on her bus.
I only speak English so if you need help speak English.

Someone probably would have complained about that. But I don’t think it would have affected her job.
The modern immigrant does not come to the USA to assimilate. They come here to conquer. That is a fact not an opinion.
Perhaps the best way to deal with school bus drivers is to make them independent contractors. The contract can stipulate all kinds of things but mostly a set rate per trip or session.
Hourly billing is not really feasible for a number of reasons. The driver then becomes responsible for paying the taxes on the received fees as shown on the 1099.

I know it’s a better way to control costs, but I am surprised that the teach union would pass up the opportunity to unionize the bus drivers. All those dues that can be turned into political contributions!!
If you do not fight, you lose by default. Being nice is losing when important principle is at stake.

As an independent contractor for many years, I can provide testimony that the controlling of costs is minor compared to all the other benefits from the simplicity of the arrangement.
Time and litigation will tell if the contract protects the contractor from political discrimination.
I suspect a large settlement will result
