'Liberal pipe dream' | Kentucky congressman responds to Beshear after being blamed for layoffs at EV battery plant

A Kentucky congressman responded to Andy Beshear Tuesday, days after Kentucky's governor blamed him for sweeping layoffs at an electric vehicle battery plant in his district.

BlueOval SK said roughly 1,500 people at its Glendale plant would be laid off as Ford takes sole ownership of the facility after a partnership with a South Korean company fell through.

Last week Beshear said U.S. Rep. Brett Guthrie, a Republican who represents Kentucky’s second congressional district, was partially to blame for any job losses due to his support for President Donald Trump’s “Big, Beautiful Bill."

Beshear said Guthrie made no changes to cuts regarding EVs, despite having three EV plants in his district.

“They took a hatchet to the EV industry,” Beshear said Monday, doubling down. “Any temporary job losses [are] directly on this President and that congressman.”

In an interview Tuesday with WHAS11’s Isaiah Kim-Martinez, Guthrie said the governor’s comments were “absurd.”

“I know he’s running for president, so he has to make those comments because he has to satisfy a very liberal base if he wants to be the Democratic Party nominee for president,” he added. “But I will tell you, mandating everybody buy an electric car is not what the American people want.”

Thank you very much and God bless you.

If this was such a viable industry, why would it need such heavy funding from the Federal government to begin with, eh, Andy?

He only got to be governor because his daddy was. Without his family in politics, he would have realized very little success.

These are workers at the HUGE vehicle battery plant in Glendale, KY.

I’m curious to see how / if it will be repurposed. It’s quite a facility, I’ve watched it go up for the last 2-3 years when driving to visit family.

That facility is serious business. Lots of money spent constructing it. Lots of your money in government loans I expect to never be paid back by Ford.

I’d be happy to have a home 5-day battery with necessary electronic modules out on a wall in the garage.

Not sure how much I’d be willing to pay for it.

The layoffs are for retooling. The layoffs aren't permanent. This has always been common practice in the automotive industry. All the laid off will be brought back.

Jackery has some good power stations. Don’t think any would make it five days yet without recharging, but you might want to check those out. :-)

Ford Blue Oval City between Memphis and Jackson is being repurposed to make small trucks. It was going to be an electric vehicle plant. It sounds like they will make Branco or Ranger style trucks.

Q: What did Mitch have to say about it?

A: Probably nothing since turtles can’t speak.

It’s badly stitched together aerial/sat photography. Two huge rectangular buildings, but part of one is an old one with red clay.

I feel bad for the people who lost their jobs but EVs just aren’t that popular (at this point)

I saw a number of stories yesterday that said the plant would employ 1500 or more people when fully operational but that only 150 had been hired so far.

Beshear — “Any temporary job losses [are] directly on this President and that congressman.”

Oink, oink, oink. Bring home that yummy pork! Make the rest of the country pay forever to keep those jobs.

I have a Jackery 1000 module. It can power my 3 cubic foot fridge that I keep in the back of my camper for about four days. Maybe five. If I add the diesel heater it’s good for about two days.

I think I paid $600 for it.

I’d guess that a battery capable of powering an entire house for a week would be tens of thousands of dollars given all the power needs of a house. Maybe more.
