The top police official in Washington, D.C., pressured commanders to lower classifications of crime and retaliated against those who reported spikes, creating a widespread culture of fear and distorted public data, according to a new congressional report.
An interim report from the House Oversight Committee released on Sunday claims that outgoing Metropolitan Police Department (MPD) Chief Pamela Smith, who announced her resignation on Dec. 8, oversaw an unprecedented system of intervention in crime reporting.
The Republican-led committee alleges that Smith, who is expected to remain in the position through the end of the year, pressured commanders on numerous occasions, and at times instructed them to downgrade offenses and avoid classifications that would appear on the city’s Daily Crime Report.
"By pressuring her command staff to alter classifications for the sole purpose of artificially reducing crime numbers reported out to the public, Chief Smith incentivized the manipulation of crime numbers, which do not adequately account for the crime taking place in D.C.," the report reads in part.

Is this really a big surprise? With today’s corrosive culture, there’s no way that the frequency of criminal activity reported on social media corresponds to the “dropping crime rates” that the MSM sold us on for so long. It’s all just an attempt to “define away” the problem.
Because they did.
This is no surprise to anyone except for House Republicans.
Wish they would focus on doing something for their voters instead of yesterday’s unsurprising news.
This should surprise absolutely no one. This has been going on for years. Its not new. Watch an old episode of HBO’s The Wire to see a master class on how city mayors and police chiefs play politics with crime statistics. The crime is that it has been tolerated for so long.
A big Democrat city near me has announced that police will no longer respond to minor crimes if the suspect has left the scene.. You’re supposed to call it in, and get a report number. That’s it.
How long before folks stop bothering to make the call?
Then, surprise! The crime rate goes down.
And that is all these gutless coward RINOcrats will ever do!!!

Why is this even up for debate? It happened…. It happened there and just about every other big blue city in America.
Yup—the best way to lower the crime rate stats is to fail to punish crimes that are reported—usually by Soros type district attorneys.
Citizens quickly realize that reporting crime is a waste of their time and effort.
Democrat psychosis.
Become a victim of a serious crime or know someone who was the victim of a serious crime.
Learn that the police department is whitewashing crime statistics and putting everyone’s life in danger.
Reelect the same politicians and law enforcement officials over and over again.
Because they consider the Democrats the lesser of two evils.
Wasn’t there a DC cops TV series, “The District” IIRC, which had an episode about that sort of behavior?
