Canada’s governing Liberals were one seat short of a simple majority in Parliament after a Conservative lawmaker defected and joined Prime Minister Mark Carney’s party Thursday.
Michael Ma was the second Canadian Conservative opposition lawmaker to join the Liberals in just over a month. Ma, who represents Markham–Unionville, said he entered politics “to focus on solutions, not division.”
“I have concluded that Prime Minister Mark Carney is offering the steady, practical approach we need to deliver on the priorities I hear every day while door knocking in Markham–Unionville,” Ma said in his statement.
His move puts the Liberals one seat shy of a majority government and being able to pass any bill without the support of an opposition party.
Carney joined hands and welcomed Ma at the Liberal Party Christmas party on Thursday night.
“Wow, such a big welcome,” Ma said.
Carney noted his coalition of supporters is growing.
“You are going to have a much better time spending Christmas with us than Christmas with the Kranks. We are all about Santa, not about the Grinch,” Carney joked.

Leftists, NOT “liberal”. Liberal implies being open and accepting, the exact opposite of a leftist.
Bribery works and these defectors are a prime example... They will all likely lose their seats when the next election is held, so they’ve obviously been financially compensated. A Canadian member of parliament makes 200 thousand plus per year... So if you’re giving that up (governments typically run the show for four or five years) the compensation would roughly need to be a million plus.
Easily done in by the corrupt politicians in Canada. Most of them are making many millions ripping off the Canadian taxpayers, especially the ones in power.
Shouldn’t be able to take the seat with them

They may be leftists, but they are officially known as the Liberal Party. So in this case, it's a name, not a political leaning.
Liberalism meant personal freedom and personal responsibility, a long time ago. Liberalism just now means, as it is applied, as the starting point for socialism.
Liberalism leads to socialism, which leads to fascism/communism, which leads to oligarchism.
Canada is so screwed. Alberta should just declare independence if they want to survive.

Not exactly, and it depends on the issues. Different country, different constitution and division of powers between the Federal and Provincial governments means many of the political divisions and disagreements are different.

What is wrong with these people?? Remember when Canada was a place of freedom and refuge for draft dodgers? I have cousins there, with whom I’ve lost touch, but Canada used to be pro family. My aunt and uncle were missionaries there, ministering to indigenous peoples there. One cousin was a member of Parliament for the ultra conservative party.
Once a country goes left, it inevitably starts walking the path where it ends up committing crimes against humanity.
Here I thought the conservatives in Canada were making a bit of a comeback. I really and truly hope that the western parts of Canada secede and either join the US or form their own government and country.
