BANGKOK — Thailand launched airstrikes along the disputed border with Cambodia on Monday as both sides accused the other of attacking first.
Tensions have simmered since the Southeast Asian neighbors signed a truce agreement in October pushed by U.S. President Donald Trump after their territorial disputes led to five days of combat in July that killed dozens of soldiers and civilians.
Thai army spokesperson Maj. Gen. Winthai Suvaree said the Cambodian troops fired first into Thai territory in multiple areas. He said one Thai soldier was killed and four other soldiers were wounded, and that civilians were being evacuated from the affected areas.
Thailand used aircraft “to strike military targets in several areas to suppress Cambodian supporting fire attacks,” he said.
Cambodian Defense Ministry spokesperson Maly Socheata said the Thai military attacked the Cambodian troops first. She said Cambodia did not retaliate during the initial attacks Monday.
“Cambodia urges that Thailand immediately stop all hostile activities that threaten peace and stability in the region,” she said.
The Cambodian Education Ministry said several schools along the border were ordered closed Monday. Photos and videos posted on its Facebook page showed young students running out of classes to their parents. Some rode on motorcycles while others were seen walking away hurriedly.
The U.S.-brokered ceasefire that ended July’s fighting was threatened last month after Thai troops were injured by land mines, leading Thailand to announce that it would indefinitely suspend implementation of the agreement. Both sides continue to trade accusations over responsibility, even as they are supposed to be cooperating in getting rid of the mines.
A brief firing incident along the border occurred Sunday, after which both sides said the other fired first.

I’m trying hard to care about a border war between Cambodia and Thailand. Just not getting there...
Yea, me neither.
L
Football-49ers vs. Raiders. A fight breaks out between Raiders LB Phil Villipiano and 49ers TE Ted Kwalick. One observer noted: It’s a fight between 2 losers-a Polak and an Italian.
And it was ‘a perfect truce’ maybe President Trump will blame “Marjorie Traitor Greene” for the fighting staring up again.
She is a traitor
Who’s to say a small team wasn’t inserted to stir the pot. Wouldn’t take much to set off them two knuckleheads.
Does Trump get to end another war?
A traitor to who or what?
The United States, Donald J. Trump, Jeffrey Epstein or...
This is one he claims to have already ended.
The people of the USA that voted for DJT to right the wrongs that have been done to them! Screw you with your lies and propaganda! You are counted among the worst of the trolls on FR! What deep state group do you belong to? How much do you earn for posting your lies?
I certainly am not Lindsey Graham who is welcomed by President Trump with open arms and who is “Deep State” all the way I’ll say that much.
Graham supported the Al Qaeda Osama bin Laden followers in Syria all the way for many years now they rule that country.
It would be interesting to hear Henry Kissinger’s take on it.
My wife is Thai and her home isn’t far from the border, the local complex, Chang Stadium, is being used to house refugees. So this might be a little more than just a border incident.
Would it count as “another” war or would it just go back to to the original war?
Another war “ended” ...
I cared deeply about it prior to having coffee.
Use them up, then buy more.
Will Trump derangement syndrome folks now begin to cheer for violence to break out among people who have had a truce for a while? TDSers are already cheering for drug cartels to win and for seriously violent illegal alien criminals to stay in the USA.
The left is not crazy. Their followers are often uninformed, but their leaders are evil.
