Putin vows oil shipments to India will be ‘uninterrupted’ in defiance of US

Vladimir Putin has told the Indian prime minister, Narendra Modi, that Russia is ready to continue “uninterrupted” shipments of oil to India, signalling a defiant stance to the US as the two leaders met in Delhi and affirmed that their ties were “resilient to external pressure”.

The statement, made on Friday after the annual India-Russia summit, appeared to be directed at western countries – particularly the US – that have attempted to pressure New Delhi into scaling back its ties to Moscow.

The US president, Donald Trump, in August imposed an additional 25% import tariff on India over its purchase of cheap Russian oil, arguing it was undermining US sanctions and helping Putin bankroll the invasion of Ukraine.

The punitive tariffs were met with anger in New Delhi and described by the Indian government as unreasonable and unjustified. India’s relationship with Russia goes back decades and is seen as one of the country’s most important defence and geopolitical alliances.

In his statement, Putin made it clear that Russia did not intend to back down faced with US pressure over its energy cooperation with India.

“Russia is a reliable supplier of energy resources and everything necessary for the development of India’s energy sector,” Putin said. “We are ready to continue ensuring the uninterrupted supply of fuel for the rapidly growing Indian economy.”

Modi did not mention oil directly in his statement, but said that “energy security has been a strong and important pillar of the India-Russia partnership”.

India is lot closer distance wise to Russia than United States. They could build a pipeline for cheapest oil transportation cost. India has ample refining capacity.

Looks like it's a no-brainer for Modi when he makes the decision on what jets to buy. The only thing the US can offer India is more sanctions against them for not obeying at any point in time depending on Trump's mood from one day to the next. And that not to mention that our word on anything isn't worth the paper it's written on.

Lol. India has backbone with every leader that stands beside them.

Stop taking their brain trust....leave them in India to get pissed and fix themselves. Employ our own.

Karl, why didn’t you provide a link to the article you referenced? No matter, I was able to track it down. It’s from a site called “Defense Security Asia” and the comment referenced in the headline was made to Russian news outlet “Sputnik India” by “retired U.S. Air Force Lt Col Karen Kwiatkowski” - details which hardly inspire confidence in the headline’s claims.

Did you read the first sentence under the title? The Su-57 does win that comparison. It is bigger, faster, carries more, and flies further.

The issue is they apparently didn't compare what actually matters - stealth capabilities, electronics, communications. That's where the -35 "flat-out" wins the fight.

Uncle Vovo needs to tell us how he’s going to do this without his shadow fleet of oil tankers.

What does Indian-origin CEOs have to do with the success of those companies? How many of those companies were founded by Indians? A built-out, existing, public company generally has less power in the CEO, so how did any of these CEOs greatly improve those companies? Vs just kept mostly status quo, or even made the company worse?

In addition to driving India closer to China, Trump’s tariff war on India is raising the world price of oil — by restricting oil production from Russia, a nation that’s not our enemy.

I'm not even sure if that is true.

Even if it's true, the Russians have not been able to mass produce advanced weapons because they no longer have the industrial base for it.

All of the equipment they're using in Ukraine was manufactured during the Soviet Union and many of their tanks came from factories in Ukraine.

Lots of tech companies in USA were started by Indians. You can do Google search. Google is making big bucks now since the Indian was made CEO. Ditto with Microsoft, making bigger profits with Indian CEO at helm.

>>”In addition to driving India closer to China, Trump’s tariff war on India is raising the world price of oil —”

India is not being driven closer to China. The two countries are natural rivals whose suspicions of one another have frequently erupted into border skirmishes, most recently in 2022. That’s not going to change because of the Trump administration pressuring India not to buy oil from Russia.

And the world price of oil is currently the lowest it’s been in the past 4 years.
