Sir Keir Starmer will host Volodymyr Zelensky at Downing Street on Monday in a hastily arranged summit on the progress of peace talks.
The Prime Minister will be joined in London by Emmanuel Macron, the French president, and Friedrich Merz, the German Chancellor.
The trio of European leaders are attempting to ensure Ukraine is not “betrayed” during the US-led peace process with Russia, a possibility Mr Macron alluded to in a leaked phone call earlier this week.
The meeting comes as top Ukrainian officials have been holding talks in Miami with Mr Trump’s chief envoys, Steve Witkoff and Jared Kushner.
A 28-point peace plan co-authored by the US and Russia called on Ukraine to surrender territory in the eastern Donbas region that has not been conquered by Moscow and accept limits on the size of its armed forces.
The plan provoked furious objections in Kyiv and Europe, who together lobbied for a watered-down 20-point alternative that was presented to Vladimir Putin last week.
The Russian president however refused to countenance any agreement that does not include Moscow gaining the rest of Donetsk province, leaving talks once more at an impasse.
On Saturday, Mr Zelensky said he had held a “long and substantive” phone call with Mr Witkoff and Mr Kushner.
Ukrainian officials have little faith in Mr Witkoff to represent their position, a sore exacerbated by the leak of a phone call in which he coached Russia’s negotiators in how to appeal to Mr Trump.
Mr Zelensky said that, during the call, “we… went through key points that could ensure an end to the bloodshed and eliminate the threat of a new Russian full-scale invasion”.
That appeared to be a reference to the question of US security guarantees.

Starmer, Macron and Merz are all irrelevant to any peace negotiations.
Without Russia, it is just a strategy session.
“War Talks” are called “Peace Talks” in Starmer’s Orwellian lexicon.
So while reps from the Ukraine are talking with Trump reps in Florida, Starmer is holding talks with the Ukraine leadership because he says he doesn’t want the US led people to cheat them? Maybe Starmer should get a little tariff action to bring him aware of what opening his mouth against the US after the support in money and lives we’ve given to them? And some call them allies.

Who’s bringing the booger sugar?
They’re determined to start WWIII. Correct me if I’m wrong, but if they goad Russia into attacking UK, France or Germany, we have to defend them, according to NATO agreements. Evil monsters.
Putin won't be able to take all of the Donbass but eventually that will happen. Which is why they are negotiating.
Zelensky will demand French and British peacekeepers and I think there'll be a deal.
The Ukrainian army has been defeated. The collapse is happening now. The media is trying to hide this.
I think the more appropriate term to use is that they've lost the momentum. They had the initial advantage. But the Russians now have more troops and drones. At the beginning of the war, Ukraine had more drones and that was a force multiplier.

"In a development that is not entirely surprising, European leaders are claiming that Washington is looking to 'betray' Ukraine and President Zelensky during potential formal peace negotiations with Russia. 'There is a possibility that the United States will abandon Ukraine on territorial questions without providing clarity on security guarantees,' French President Emmanuel Macron reportedly said according to a 'leaked' phone call record with other European leaders."“We Must Protect Volodymyr”: Leaked Call Shows European Leaders Conspiring Against Trump Peace Plan Burning Platform, 4 December 2025
Peace talks?
What is Starmer going to say?
"Macron! Watch out for Germans coming through the Ardennes"? "Merz! Look out for a false flag and Frogs pouring over the Rhine"?
I wasn't aware that France and Germany were at war, or is it France and Ukraine, or Ukraine and Germany?
People are hungry on a small island made of coal and surrounded by fish, and this is what their PM is up to?
You are referring to Article V of the NATO treaty. All it obliges the US to do is to "consider what steps might be taken to assist".

I agree, they’ve lost the momentum and don’t have enough soldiers left to get it back. Their weapons influx is dropping radically as well, US/NATO can’t spare more and can’t build more fast enough to matter.
Ukraine could have won, this isn’t Ukraine’s fault. NATO destroys what it claims it will save, again. US/NATO failed to go on a war footing early and never did, huge mistake. Russia went on a war footing and has outlasted them. Russia’s army is larger, better trained and better equipped than when the war started, Ukraine’s is smaller and the new recruits aren’t trained enough to stay alive, let alone advance. It’s horrible to watch at this point.
Zelinsky: Way ahead of you there, Kier!
Macron: Actually, I'm pretty interested. Tell me more!
There isn't any chance of the Russians allow NATO troops in any part of Ukraine.
Well if Zelensky and those corrupt Euro leaders won’t accept Trump’s plan Trump should just walk away and tell them to do whatever but leave us out of it.

Very good phrasing.
“can’t build more fast enough”. Not won’t. Not refuse to.
Can’t.
No rare earth magnets, no weapons. China has no reason to deny them to Russia.
Right Owen. When you can’t build enough in a year to last a month on the battlefield, you and your customer are toast.
