WASHINGTON (AP) — President Donald Trump is expected to announce a proposal Wednesday to weaken vehicle mileage rules for the auto industry, loosening regulatory pressure on automakers to control pollution from gasoline-powered cars and trucks, according to several people familiar with the White House plans.
The move would be the latest action by the Trump administration to reverse Biden-era policies that encouraged cleaner-running cars and trucks, including electric vehicles. Burning gasoline for vehicles is a major contributor to planet-warming greenhouse gas emissions. The Republican administration says the new rules would increase Americans’ access to the full range of gasoline vehicles they need and can afford.
Ford CEO Jim Farley said in a statement Wednesday that the planned rollback was “a win for customers and common sense.”
“As America’s largest auto producer, we appreciate President Trump’s leadership in aligning fuel economy standards with market realities. We can make real progress on carbon emissions and energy efficiency while still giving customers choice and affordability,” Farley said.
Environmentalists decried the decision.
“In one stroke Trump is worsening three of our nation’s most vexing problems: the thirst for oil, high gas pump costs and global warming,” said Dan Becker, director of the Safe Climate Transport Campaign for the Center for Biological Diversity.
“Trump’s action will feed America’s destructive use of oil, while hamstringing us in the green tech race against Chinese and other foreign carmakers,” Becker said.

My Honda went to 366,000 with only a seal change.
I will say it was burning over a half quart of oil every month, but it was driven a lot.
This is why post 2020 cars are crap. From stop start to belt drive oil immersed oil pumps,to tiny overstressed engines cheaply built by IC engineers looking for a new career, you won’t see a US made engine go over 90000 miles without 2k+ repairs.
“…Light weight oil, and roller lifters…”
The lightweight oil “fix” at GM is a scandal and hopefully a class action that will cost them.
Roller lifters are pretty good and with low ZDDP oil, basically the only way you can build a pushrod engine anymore with more than modest performance. Of course, you can bet that GM is paying the supplier about $1.37 ea for them. Stellantis, even less.
My 1997 Neon is at 299,500 miles, and poised to make 300k by the end of the year. My secret, as an angrier young man, was to hit the rev-limiter like a bongo.
Carbon dioxide is a killer. Fill a room with it, and you die.
Still not as bad as dihydrogen oxide, which kills a lot of people every year. Nasty stuff. W.C. Fields and I stay away from it.
This has nothing to do with pollution because CO2 is neither dirty, harmful to human life.
But with better brakes!
Giddy up giddy up 409!
What year is your Acura? I bought my 2016 used three years ago and have no idea how long it will last.
“EPA required yearly annual cost analysis”
The internet says there is no such thing.
Are you a mechanic?
Ford L6 300 had great torque.
Saving the American People over 109 billion dollars accornding to the other posting.
What I don’t understand is how Europe is so environmentally aware but every vehicle I rode in when we went to Italy was a standard transmission diesel Mercedes mini van.
Or a hybrid Toyota hatchback cab in Rome.
Yet, most of the daily commuters were either driving a Vespa scooter or a FIAT.
diesel was 1.63 Euros/liter
gasoline was 1.73 Euros/liter
FYI, Toyota is having a hard time with this new turbo 4 Cylinder in the Tacoma. Like major engine problems. Now nobody wants to buy the new trucks and they are having to cut the price.
I stand corrected. I knew it was back in the “energy crisis” days of the early 70’s.
Ape Pee strikes again!
Just watched a tear apart of a Toyota turbo V6. What a frickin’ monstrous nightmare.
Emissions aren’t really a problem where I live. By the way, I don’t live in California. They ruin everything they can there, it seems.
CO2 has to be at a MUCH higher percentage than what it is in the atmosphere to be dangerous.
Its good for boiling cereal grains in the creation of ethanol, though.
