WASHINGTON (AP) — President Donald Trump is expected to announce a proposal Wednesday to weaken vehicle mileage rules for the auto industry, loosening regulatory pressure on automakers to control pollution from gasoline-powered cars and trucks, according to several people familiar with the White House plans.
The move would be the latest action by the Trump administration to reverse Biden-era policies that encouraged cleaner-running cars and trucks, including electric vehicles. Burning gasoline for vehicles is a major contributor to planet-warming greenhouse gas emissions. The Republican administration says the new rules would increase Americans’ access to the full range of gasoline vehicles they need and can afford.
Ford CEO Jim Farley said in a statement Wednesday that the planned rollback was “a win for customers and common sense.”
“As America’s largest auto producer, we appreciate President Trump’s leadership in aligning fuel economy standards with market realities. We can make real progress on carbon emissions and energy efficiency while still giving customers choice and affordability,” Farley said.
Environmentalists decried the decision.
“In one stroke Trump is worsening three of our nation’s most vexing problems: the thirst for oil, high gas pump costs and global warming,” said Dan Becker, director of the Safe Climate Transport Campaign for the Center for Biological Diversity.
“Trump’s action will feed America’s destructive use of oil, while hamstringing us in the green tech race against Chinese and other foreign carmakers,” Becker said.

AP = Always Propaganda
They also force car makers to put all kinds of weight cutting and techno-crap on the cars, to stay away from normally aspirated straightforward engines, and those stupid engine cut-off at stop devices. It allows them to not be forced into using thin sheet metal that you can dent with your thumb or plastic on the body. You can build a tougher windshield instead of the chip and crack prone ultra thin ones.
The chase for mileage is ok here and there, but modern cars and trucks are suffering badly for it.
This drove the industry to place small displacement, turbo charged motors in nearly every vehicle.
You just don’t get 200,000+ miles out of a turbocharged engine. Unless it’s a diesel.
Any mechanics out there that can verify?
The carmakers should take advantage of this time to each make the most awesome muscle car they’ve ever made.
All other things being equal, mileage and emissions are inversely related. Emissions requirements have limited the power and mileage that can be produced from gasoline engines.
If so then lets hope the auto manufacturers will throw away all of their new junk engines, and replace them with the reliable, tried and true engines of the past. They need to pull out the blueprints from 20 years ago. Gm can dump their active fuel management, Direct fuel injection, Cam phasing, Light weight oil, and roller lifters. We could go back to engines that could last 300,000 to 500,000 miles without major engine problems.
It's way past time that America got rid of excessive, failed, pollution "control" legislation.
Maybe Cadillac could build that V-16 Coupe they prototyped a few years back.
Yay!!!
Five years of good performance beats the heck outta three months of a-little-bit-better pollution control and poor performance.
Good points!
It will allow auto makers to go from V4 turbos and V6 turbos to V6 and V8 which are more dependable, cheaper, and last longer. By lasting longer it will reduce air pollution because fewer cars will need to be built but the administrative state and AP never reflect that.
Yes, please! Bring back the 1960s quality muscle cars.
“Burning gasoline for vehicles is a major contributor to planet-warming greenhouse gas emissions”
That feed the plants and trees that we eat and generate our oxygen we breathe from the carbon they feed on. They are so stupid.
And bring back the spare tire. They got rid of the spare tire to save weight. Now when you have a flat, you are out of luck.
Bring back the 427 and Holley carbs!
I’m actually amazed that the Hellcats were even able to exist over the last ten years. Imagine what Detroit could come up with if the regulations get scrapped.
