Jury trials scrapped for crimes with sentences of less than three years

Jury trials in England and Wales for crimes that carry a likely sentence of less than three years will be scrapped, the justice secretary has announced.

The reforms to the justice system include creating "swift courts" under the government's plan to tackle unprecedented delays in the court system.

Serious offences including murder, robbery and rape will still go before a jury, and volunteer community magistrates, who deal with the majority of all criminal cases, will take on even more work.

David Lammy said the reforms were "bold" but "necessary", but the Conservatives described the plans as the "beginning of the end of jury trials".

Retired Court of Appeal judge Sir Brian Leveson was asked by the Lord Chancellor to come up with a series of proposals to reduce the backlog in the courts, in a process which began back in December 2024.

These proposals included jury-free trials and more out-of-court settlements like cautions.

In July, Sir Brian said "fundamental" reforms were needed to "reduce the risk of total system collapse".

I can see how Sharia law could slip in under the radar.

This will certainly include trials for “public order offenses”. You know, offenses that used to be considered free speech.

It’s a ‘new’ type of ‘law’... That ignores the ‘law’.

When I was in high school they still taught history and civics. Even then, long before going to law school, I thought the idea of the UK’s famously unwritten I constitution sounded off. Now I appreciate why: if it ain’t written in a constituon, tyrants can just jettison what they don’t like

Do the Brits need to have a revolution and force King Chuck to sign Magna Carta 2?

I prefer our system, but it can be said that their ‘constitution’ can also be changed much more easily for the better, when they find that something doesn’t work.

For such a small country they sure have created a huge crime problem for themselves.

Yes they created a license to steal for all the illegals they imported so they can fill their pockets with cash.

Deny jury trials to patriots so they can be jailed for up to three years by judicial fiat.

“...it can be said that their ‘constitution’ can also be changed much more easily for the better, when they find that something doesn’t work.”

Yep, only takes a majority of Parliament to alter or abolish rights that have existed for a millennium. Only three of the original 63 clauses of the Magna Carta are still in effect; the rights of the Church of England, the rights of the City of London, and the right to trial by jury. The last is scheduled for elimination.

Imagine where the 2nd Amendment would be under such a system, people having guns doesn’t work. Expressing views contrary to what the government thinks is proper, that doesn’t work either.

Like you, I prefer the black letter rights in our Constitution.

That was my first reaction too. This will keep the common people from undermining their Ruling Class’s insistence on squashing free speech for non-muslim citizens. A thousand Judge Boasbergs imposing harsh sentences for not being nice to muslims.

Our written constitution is only a minor impediment to tyrants. See NDAA, Arctic Frost, Civil Asset Forfeiture, and our almost non-existent protections against search and seizure.

But it’s better than nothing.

All crimes against Islam will be given sentences of 2 years 363 days.

Islamic criminals and African criminals will not be punished for anything.

Guaranteed.

We just have to learn to live with search and seizure because of dangerous criminals. Other than that, we have many unique rights and protections.

The UK has a few documents that together can be seen as a constitution. But here’s the thing. At any time, Parliament is free to change those rules.

Kinda like what federal judges do to our Constitution.

“For such a small country they sure have created a huge crime problem for themselves.”

I wonder how that happened?
And isn’t it curious that our politicians reassure us daily that we don’t have a crime problem, yet the courts and justice system do have a problem! /s
