President Donald Trump suggested Thursday that the United States is preparing to take new action against alleged drug trafficking networks in Venezuela, telling service members during a Thanksgiving call that efforts for strikes on land will be starting “very soon.”
“In recent weeks, you’ve been working to deter Venezuelan drug traffickers, of which there are many. Of course, there aren’t too many coming in by sea anymore,” Trump told service members in the call.
“You probably noticed that people aren’t wanting to be delivering by sea, and we’ll be starting to stop them by land also,” the president continued. “The land is easier, but that’s going to start very soon.
“We warn them: Stop sending poison to our country,” Trump added.
Trump comments suggest he has made up his mind on a course of action in Venezuela following multiple high-level briefings and a mounting US show of force in the region earlier this month.

Mexico next.
Nothing outside that headline suggests AT ALL any sort of land invasion. At most may drop a few bombs. More likely it means interdiction at the US border.
Bombing the bad guys in their boats and bombing them in their trucks may seem like the same thing, but I think they might involve two separate jurisdictions of international law.
Claim it as a U.S. Territory and NEVER cede it!

There are about 2500 guys on amphibious ships among the many ships in the Caribbean. There has been talk of 10s of thousands, but those crew the ships. 2500 is the number, vs a 63,000 man army.
I doubt if even the warmongers can persuade Trump there would be no casualties.
A lot of shit will hit the fan next week.
A few bombs are not going to do anything. And we cannot do "just a few bombs". Not without losing "just a few bombers".
Venezuela has deployed Russian S-300 and Pantsir-S1M air defense systems which can threaten our bombers. There are unconfirmed reports that they have also deployed the S-500 systems in some locations. These are regarded as the best air defense in the world, and they are manned by Russian technicians.
If we are going to hit Venezuela, it will require swarms of stand-off weapons to suppress high quality air defenses. Then follow-up strikes will be needed to hit appropriate military targets. Then raids might be required to ensure that certain people have been killed. It would be a major activity requiring complex, detailed planning. And war projects never go according to plan.
Invasion with occupation of Venezuela would be a terrible idea. But raids to completely destroy Cartel organization might be workable. They would be very high-risk operations.
Oh, BTW, there are Russian and Chinese military forces in Venezuela. That will make things a lot more complicated.
I do not see Congressional support for this. We have the "gang of six" actively encouraging mutiny in the armed forces justified by implications of "unlawful orders" from President Trump. Worse yet, I believe that some of our politicians are supported by Mexican and Venezuelan Cartels.
The level of expeditionary forces we have in the area cannot be sustained indefinitely. It always comes down to "use it or lose it". A surprise then for Christmas and the New Year?
It's complicated.
More than anything this drives democrats nuts, because now he’s going after their drug supply.
“More than anything this drives democrats nuts, because now he’s going after their drug supply.”
True. That’s one of the real reasons.
The other is that they are at war with Trump and 60% of of Americans that voted for him.
Probably 80% if you take out all of the illegal alien, dead and fake voters.
It’s not about drugs. It’s about oil. Venezuela just “claimed” oil and territory belonging to Guyana. And even more, it’s about Venezuela signing treaties with China last spring and Russia in late September.
If it was about drugs, you’d see a couple of US banks seized one morning and some Caribbean and other foreign banks sanctioned.
It’s another regime change op. But it’s not like we have debt and problems at home or anything.
Meanwhile, the CEO of Pfizer is there in the Oval Office.
If we are going to hit Venezuela, it will require swarms of stand-off weapons to suppress high quality air defenses.

Every one of which relies on neodymium magnets in fin actuators and small ones in the nav package.
We cannot be squandering these. That inventory has to last 10 yrs until our own refining comes online.
This is where it’s at, the root cause, imo.
Venezuela has claimed Essequibo province in Guyana for years.
The big oil discoveries are offshore and further south. There’s talk of Guyana becoming the next Kuwait !! So it’s a tempting target now I suppose.
A War for Oil would at least make economic sense, and we might benefit from it - if that was all this is about. There are worse reasons to make a war. Not that I am particularly willing to invest my son in any such projects.
But wait, there is more. Much more. My personal speculation only:
This is about ejecting Russia and China and Iran and Hezbollah from Venezuela. It has an additional benefit of being a worked example of what can happen to Mexico if they will not pull back on Cartel activity in the United States.
And we have turned a "war on drugs" into the real thing. Maybe that will work.

First of all, the Russian S-300 and Pantsir-S1M air defense systems are antiques and cannot even stop the the Israeli, US, or Ukraine Air Forces - these systems have all been defeated routinely. They are certainly not the best AD in the world.
Secondly, bombing missions are always preceded by SEAD [ Suppression of Enemy Air Defenses ] that eliminates threats, Russian made or not, before bombers go in. SEAD eliminates surface-to-air missiles (SAMs), anti-aircraft artillery (AAA), early-warning radars, and command, control, and communication functions.
No losses to these system in any Iraqi operations, or recently in the Iranian operation because of SEAD. Since both or those operations never saw the SEAD missions before they struck, what makes anyone think the Venezuelans will magically fair better?
Refer you to the invasion of Panama which worked very well and after serving his tern in the US for drug trafficking, racketeering, and money laundering, Noriega was returned to Panama where he is currently serving a sentence for murder. What makes Maduro special here?
It’s about oil.

Venezuelan oil is fit only for low grade uses like tar and road paving.
