Security and police let a lot of things go at Nathan Phillips Square and in Jewish neighbourhoods but seemed to the throw the book a disabled patriot who was playing national anthem on the same square Toronto was raising the Palestinian flag Monday.
If Scott Youmans had been hitting a rock of crack cocaine or mainlining fentanyl or heroin, not only would Toronto City Hall security guards have allowed it, but someone would ensure he had a clean pipe or needle to do it.
But they wouldn’t let him play O Canada over his portable sound system Monday in Nathan Phillips Square.
Citing a strange bylaw that is seemingly never enforced on anybody else, security requested a Toronto Police officer stop the playing of this country’s national anthem.
That security and police actually did this might be unprecedented.
In four decades of reporting from coast to coast, never have I encountered someone being told he couldn’t play O Canada in the public square. This was a first and hopefully a last.
What happened Monday should never happen again. The national anthem should outrank any municipal bylaw.
“I have never seen anything like this enforced before,” noted journalist and lawyer Caryma Sa’d, who has been to hundreds of demonstrations.

O Canada you fail
In the UK he’d be arrested for hate speech.
For playing “O Canada” or playing “God Save the King”?
Perhaps they need to clean it up by changing the title to “Oh Can of Duz.”
I don’t understand how the police in the UK and Canada can sleep at night after some of the things they do to patriotic citizens every day.
The problem isn’t “O Canada”, the problem is the amplifier. I have been to other demonstrations (pro-life and similar) where bullhorns were disallowed.
The fellow ought to get some nice bagpipes and play it that way.
Dunno .... eh?
Sounds like Canada has contracted the disease from Europe.
Selective enforcement. Target the traditional population and their symbols.
Ignore law breaking by the replacement population.
Here, we have muzlimes complaining about Christian church bells ringing while they are free to broadcast their call to prayer or whatever they call it.
