If you don't have a Real ID the next time you fly, it could cost you.
The Transportation Security Administration has proposed a rule that would charge travelers who lack a Real ID an $18 fee at security checkpoints, according to a notice published Thursday in the Federal Register.
"This notice serves as a next step in the process in REAL ID compliance, which was signed into law more than 20 years ago and finally implemented by Secretary Noem as of May 2025," a TSA spokesperson told CBS News, noting that the agency would soon provide additional guidance....
The TSA said that biometric verification, which it also refers to as a registered traveler program, will streamline the process of identifying passengers. ...

I didn’t know that we can fly even without showing a ‘real’ ID...
This is aimed at illegals
I only fly about once a year. I wonder if paying an $18 fee would have been cheaper?
In third world countries, when the police hassle you about your papers, you can just slip them some cash to smooth the process. Glad we’re so different,
A “Real” ID. You mean like an illegal alien named “No Name Given” who was issued a CDL? Kinda defeats the purpose, doesn’t it?
Neither did I. An $18 fee for not having one sounds better than the $60 fee I was charged to get a new driver’s license.
The cost of being regulated keeps rising.
You can still use a passport.
I refuse top get a “real ID”. Just on principle. Besides all you do is show some dmv worker your birth certificate and, I dunno, some bill with your name on it, pay $20 or $30 and get it in the mail.
Not much vetting involved. I did that already when I first got my dl.
Folks are still flying around without Real ID? I thought folks without “Real ID” were supposed to be prevented from boarding. All in the name of “safety,” donchaknow. Nice to see that’s working out.🙄

My solution...
Issue every adult American citizen, at no out of pocket cost, an American passport. Put minors on the parents’.
Make that the gold standard for ID.
Make passport fraud a capital offense.
Doing the above would solve a lot of problems.
And it would be use of taxpayer money I would heartily support.
Can we shut the government down again? At least until the TSA assholes all starve to death.
We use our Passports.
