Germany should take over the historically American role of Nato Europe commander, Donald Trump’s envoy to the Western alliance has suggested.
Matthew Whitaker, the US ambassador to Nato, said he hoped Germany would one day volunteer for the prestigious role of Supreme Allied Commander Europe.
He told the Berlin Security Conference: “I look forward to the day when Germany comes to the United States and says that we’re ready to take over the Supreme Allied Commander position. I think we’re a long way away from that, but I look forward to those discussions.”
Since Nato was founded in 1949, the post of Supreme Allied Commander Europe has been held by an American, typically a four-star general, who oversees the alliance’s military activities in Europe.
The current occupant of the role is Gen Alexus G Grynkewich of the US Air Force. The first US officer to hold the post was Dwight D Eisenhower, the Second World War hero and 34th US president.
For months, rumours have swirled that the US is eager to step back from the role and allow a European general to take command.
Mr Whitaker’s remarks suggest the Trump administration would like to see Germany eventually overtake America as the main security guarantor in Europe.
It follows a pledge by Friedrich Merz, the German chancellor, to rebuild the Bundeswehr [armed forces] into the “strongest conventional army” in Europe. “Germany is back,” Mr Merz has claimed.
Mr Whitaker’s comments about the post of Supreme Allied Commander Europe going to Germany ruffled some feathers during a panel discussion on European defence.
Lt Gen Wolfgang Wien, Germany’s representative to Nato and the EU, told the panel he was slightly taken aback by the suggestion.

Irony doesn’t begin to describe this.
Sounds good, after all Gemans can’t even run Germany.
More Jiu Jitsu?
10 years ago, an American President probably would have asked Great Britain to take over NATO, if not them, France.
But now, both those countries appear intent on divesting themselves of all sovereign and autonomous duties. Those now managing those territories no longer even try stopping the invasion of the underclass. Germany is not much better, but there are signs of new resistance building.
Lincoln: “I feel like the man who was tarred and feathered and ridden out of town on a rail. To the man who asked him how he liked it, he said: ‘If it wasn’t for the honor of the thing, I’d rather walk.’”
Fine with me.
Someone tell The Donald that the Germans actually want out of NATO. Seriously.

“Keep the Russians out, the Americans in, and the Germans down.” - NATO’s first Secretary General, Lord Ismay
Poland might be the best. On the front lines with Russia, a long history of knowing how they act and not suffering from rectal-cranial inversion like the UK, France and Germany.

Bad idea. Instead let NATO be commanded by a UK general. And then by a French general. And then by a German general. Each general serves for one year. Then the position rotates.
And the US?
US out of NATO.
A Muslim country heading NATO? No.
Once all the Germans were warlike and mean
But that couldn’t happen again
We taught them a lesson in 1918
And they’ve hardly bothered us since then
With all due respect, I think this is ill advised to say the least. It is one thing to reduce USA’s financial outlay, but another thing altogether to cede control over the strategic role of NATO.
The US needs to run it like a joint operating agreement. We are the operator, and bill out to the non-operators for their share of costs every month. If they don’t pay, they get no protection.

Might as well let the Turks run it.
