The Islamisation of Germany is on full view in the city of Hanau, birthplace of the Brothers Grimm who gave the world their fairy tales of Rotkäppchen – Little Red Riding Hood – Rapunzel, Hänsel und Gretel and many more. In the central square stands an impressive bronze statue of the two brothers in long dress coats looking over one of the manuscripts in which they put down their enchanting tales drawn from Germanic folklore, culture and history.

Dominating the streets leading off from the square are endless kebab shops, fast-food takeaways, restaurants and grocery shops, most of them displaying signs that food is “halal” and thereby compliant with Islamic dietary laws. As a veteran of Iraq and Afghanistan, I couldn’t help but be struck by all of this – along with all the Arabic spoken and the As-Salaam-Alaikum greetings – especially the presence of the Afghan Starway restaurant and the Kabul Central supermarket.

Germany’s immigration situation is particularly challenging, primarily because it can’t as readily resort to Donald Trump’s tough-guy deportation tactics. Many of these people, if not most, arrived legally and were welcomed, either as part of Germany’s 1960s guest worker programme or as refugees from the Syrian Civil War. Many are German passport holders.

In Worms – one of the oldest cities in northern Europe, famous for its 1521 Edict of Worms in which Martin Luther was declared a heretic – the situation is even more stark, especially if you apply the “bar test”.
