Ukraine isn’t hanging about in trying to fix the damage caused by a megabucks corruption scandal exposed this week.
Top officials are rushing to reassure Kyiv’s Western partners, after the alleged $100 million kickback scheme in the energy sector — which implicated current and former top officials, and some close associates of President Volodymyr Zelenskyy — troubled allies.
“We must act quickly and decisively on the battlefield and act equally in vital areas within the state. The government’s task is to show Ukrainian society and partners that under no circumstances will we tolerate corruption and will respond quickly to any facts,” Ukrainian Prime Minister Yulia Svyrydenko told POLITICO.
“We value our strong and permanent relations with foreign partners. It is important for us to maintain these relations, based on trust, and any threats to them are unacceptable,” she added.

One of Russia’s most highly decorated heroes in the war with Ukraine instructed his troops to intentionally shoot him to sit out of combat and collect a fat paycheck, according to investigators — who also found his alleged heroics were completely bogus.
Lt. Col. Konstantin Frolov — nicknamed the “Executioner” for his reputation as a highly skilled sniper — was identified as the mastermind behind the massive military scam where he instructed 35 officers and soldiers in Russia’s elite sniper unit, the prestigious 83rd Air Assault Brigade, to deliberately fire at him and each other, the probe recently concluded, according to Russian newspaper Kommersant.
In return, the troops pocketed nearly $2.5 million in total from the Kremlin for their wounds, the investigation found.
But that was just the tip of the iceberg in exposing the embellished mystique behind Frolov’s military record — including the killing of dozens of Ukrainian soldiers and claims that he had been injured on seven occasions during the war, the outlet reported.

Small potatoes compared to Armstrong, but at least he paid SOME of it back, under court order.
Moscow’s Nikulinsky District Court sentenced Vladislav Tsoraev to 12 years in prison after he was found guilty of conning Konstantin Titov, a former governor and senator in the southwestern region of Samara Oblast.
Tsoraev introduced himself in 2007 to Titov as the head of Center, an investment fund that he said was organized by Russia’s presidential administration. Tsoraev promised a 100 percent return, via investments in blue chip stocks, if Titov put in at least $500,000.
Titov forked over an initial $4.4 million, followed by an additional €1.5 million (US$ 1.68 million) loaned by his son Alexei Titov, a former owner of Samara’s Solidarnost bank.
But much like Center itself, the returns on the investment turned out to be non-existent. After several months, Titov got cold feet and demanded his money back.
This never happened. Tsoraev was sentenced to nine years in prison in 2009 in a separate fraud case.
In December 2015, Titov filed a complaint with law enforcement alleging the theft of US$ 6 million.
