Washington was rocked in early October with the revelation that the Biden administration, by way of Jack Smith’s investigation into the 2020 election, had ordered the FBI to seize data from the cell phones of eight Republican senators and congressmen.
Over the past month, revelations about Smith’s operation, codenamed “Arctic Frost,” worsened.
More individuals, including Republican Texas Senator Ted Cruz and even President Donald Trump himself, were targeted. As were conservative organizations like Charlie Kirk’s Turning Point USA and the America First Policy Institute – the latter of which didn’t even exist in 2020.
Plus, it turned out District Judge James Boasberg – he of “turn the planes around” fame – ordered telephone companies not to tell the affected parties their data was being seized.
Furious Republicans, led by Republican Texas Rep. Brandon Gill, have introduced articles of impeachment against Boasberg. Gill said Boasberg “compromised the impartiality of the judiciary” and weaponized “his power against his political opponents.”
Some may be skeptical of any attempt to impeach Boasberg, arguing that getting 67 Senate votes to remove him from the bench is almost certainly impossible.
There is some merit to that argument, but nonetheless, impeaching Boasberg is absolutely necessary.
First of all, Boasberg completely failed to scrutinize what the government was asking him to approve. These were not common criminals being investigated, nor were they people who even participated in Jan. 6. These were sitting, elected United States senators and congressmen – and a former president of the United States – who had their cell phone conversation records seized despite not being suspected of committing any crime.
