U.S. airlines again canceled more than 1,000 flights on Saturday, the second day of the Federal Aviation Administration’s mandate to reduce air traffic because of the government shutdown.

So far, the slowdown at many of the nation’s busiest airports hasn’t caused widespread disruptions. But it has deepened the impact felt by the nation’s longest federal shutdown.

WRAL News Brief Watch More “We all travel. We all have somewhere to be,” said Emmy Holguin, 36, who was flying from Miami Saturday to see family in the Dominican Republic. “I'm hoping that the government can take care of this.”

Analysts warn that the upheaval will intensify and spread far beyond air travel if cancellations keep growing and reach into Thanksgiving week.

Already there are concerns about the squeeze on tourism destinations and holiday shipping.

Article:

“We all travel. We all have somewhere to be.”

That used to be me flying all over the place on business—before I retired.

I have not been to an airport since.

Cancel all air travel to and from any airport in the Washington, D.C. area.

Trump's presidency is "illegitimate" according to the Democratic Party so they are not going to give the GOP an inch.

Why doesn’t Trump pull a Reagan and bring in military ATCs?

Because the ATC’s are not really the problem. In 1981 they walked off on strike. Now, there are pockets of ATCs calling out sick, but there’s no mass strike or walkout. I believe if Trump was to call the military ATCs in it would cause an unnecessary escalation and lead to a worse situation when the shutdown ends. I don’t blame ATC. They are being asked to do an extremely stressful job and are being caught in a game of leverage the Dems are playing.

I have to give the Dems credit from a purely tactical standpoint. They have been able to somehow turn public opinion against Trump all based on something they did. That said, the Republican Senate is useless and the Trump Admin lost the narrative on this. The sombreros were great for the first two weeks and not a peep since then. I don’t understand why Trump is so averse to a nationwide speech to the American people explaining what the Democrats are doing and why he will give in. He never does this and the only people who watch his AF1 and runway pressers are hardcore political junkies like most of us.

Good thinking. That will get Congress’s attention.

Sabotage takes but one shoe.

I would like to point out the great dangers of DC and NYC being served by three airports with air traffic controller understaffing.

Closing down LaGuardia and National would reduce the possibility of collisions and I urge Trump to act ASAP, yet again.

I’m not sure the screens are the same.

From what I’ve seen, the FAA screens baffle me.

1. policemen can direct the ‘winged cars’ on the ground
2. a state-paid person can watch radar screens and broadcast on digital radio

I don’t like to fly, but I do when I have to. I will be flying in a few weeks to meet my first granddaughter (praying for a healthy delivery for both mom and baby).

However, today my sister in law was supposed to be heading to take care of MIL for the week. Her flight today was cancelled, and they couldn’t guarantee her a seat for tomorrow’s flight. So the trip is off. MIL is 97, still independent, but needs some help. She loves having her children with her instead of caregivers (she has 3 really great caregivers, and a handful of other decent ones.)

Needless to say, this is a great disappointment for her. I hope they get this mess of scheduling figured out before I have to travel.

Amen, Delta Diamond until I retired last year. I will attempt to never fly again.

This is a definite sign that government is way too big. Privatize this stuff.
