'I couldn’t wrap my head around the concept myself,' Peel police spokesperson said Thursday

The second victim in a crash involving a youth driver in Brampton Saturday wasn't found until hours after the collision, Peel police say, after the two vehicles had already been transported to the police impound yard.

The collision occurred around 4:20 a.m. at Chinguacousy Road and Queen Street W., and Peel police Const. Tyler Bell-Morena said the "gruesome" discovery of a second body happened at approximately 5:30 p.m., over 12 hours later.

Bell-Morena said that after learning what happened, he had to look at the vehicle himself before he could do a news briefing, he said Thursday.

“I couldn’t wrap my head around the concept myself," he said. "I looked at the vehicle, the condition of the vehicle was so deformed so that unfortunately, she was not easily visible at the scene."

A Blue Audi t-boned a Black Honda Civic in the intersection, then there was another collision with a pole and both vehicles left the roadway, Bell-Morena said. Three people from the Audi were transported to hospital with minor injuries, and an adult man, 31, was located deceased in the Black Honda Civic and was extricated.

The driver and the passenger of the Black Honda Civic were not known to each other, as it was a rideshare booked by the passenger after a social event, he said.

“The troubling information now is in the sequence of events that followed,” Bell-Morena said.

'No immediate or clear indication of a passenger:' police

When the deceased driver was extricated from the vehicle "there was no immediate or clear indication of a passenger," Peel police Const. Amanda Steenson said.

Then, the two vehicles were taken to the police impound yard, Steenson said in an email Thursday.

Hours after the collision, police received reports of a missing 20-year-old woman whose last known location was confirmed through a shared tracking app as the crash site, Steenson said.

“Officers simultaneously checked the crash scene and attended the impound yard to determine whether evidence of a passenger existed,” Steenson said.

"Officers closely examined the rear passenger compartment of the demolished Honda Civic and located the remains of the deceased woman embedded in the wreckage."

Steenson said police requested assistance from Brampton fire and emergency responders to extricate the woman's body with the use of specialized equipment.

“We recognize the profound impact of this tragedy and ask that the privacy of the families involved be respected as they continue to grieve this loss,” Steenson said.

Passenger reported missing by family, friend: police

There were two reports of the woman being missing, one from family and one from a friend "about an hour apart," around 4 p.m. Bell-Morena said.

"This poor woman did everything that she should have to get home safe that night," he said.

"We also need to be reminded that this is a criminal investigation and a lot of the information that I'm sharing is sensitive to ensuring a prosecution and that this monster that caused irreparable damage to these families is prosecuted to the full extent of our justice system."

The driver of the second vehicle, a young offender, was charged with dangerous driving causing death and failure to comply with demand, Peel police said in a social media post Tuesday. Bell said the offender is 17 years old.

The Major Collision Bureau is now taking over the investigation, he said.

I guess it’s a Canadian journalism thing to capitalize the colors of cars.

They were hoping it was a “white Honda Civic”.

It’s a city in Ontario. And the Peel is the regional police force that serves the cities of Mississauga and Brampton.
