Ongoing government shutdown hinders healthcare providers during flu season

LA CROSSE, Wis. (WKBT) — The ongoing government shutdown is creating challenges for healthcare providers across the country as they enter flu season without access to updated federal disease tracking data.

CDC dashboards that normally help healthcare providers prepare for illness spikes have not been updated for weeks due to the shutdown, forcing doctors to adjust their approach to patient care and illness prevention.

Dr. Aaron Olson, medical director of La Crosse Area Neighborhood Family Clinics, said the missing data affects how his practice prepares for seasonal illness patterns.

"Some of the ways we might use the CDC data is just to try to anticipate when influenza is going to reach our area. And we can kind of gear up to do that in terms of staffing and having testing available," Olson said.

The lack of real-time federal tracking data makes it more difficult for healthcare providers to quickly and accurately identify what illnesses are spreading in their communities and determine appropriate treatment protocols.

"When people come in with a specific illness, we might be able to identify as that likely being the cause. Whereas without that data, you know, it'll be more challenging," Olson explained.

Healthcare providers typically rely on CDC systems to monitor disease trends, track outbreaks, and prepare for seasonal illness patterns. These tools help medical facilities allocate resources, adjust staffing levels, and stock appropriate testing supplies and medications.

Without access to updated federal data, local healthcare providers are adapting their approach to patient care. Medical professionals are monitoring symptoms more closely and making treatment decisions based on what they observe directly in their practices.

"For us, sort of being frontline we're going to see the patients and try to treat them as best we can with whatever data we have," Olson said.

The timing of the data disruption is particularly concerning as the country enters peak flu season. Medical professionals are emphasizing prevention strategies while federal tracking systems remain offline. Healthcare providers are strongly encouraging patients to get vaccinated against seasonal illnesses as soon as possible.

Trump’s making an announcement per RSBN. Tune in at 6:30 PST. Hopefully it’s not another Hannity-like announcement. Trump has more bang.

The media wants more eyeballs.

Too bad the Somalis can’t generally read English.

“”When people come in with a specific illness, we might be able to identify as that likely being the cause.””

WOW - that’s reassuring! Who knew they needed seasonal data to determine that? Have they forgotten how diagnosing was done BEFORE then?

Because the DemocRATs elected a far left Socialist in far left of center New York city... They think they’re winning the shutdown debate... They aren’t... They’re losing that debate and Trump is winning it... But don’t tell them and the media... Because they stupidly think they’re winning.

The government can do whatever magic they did in 2020-2021 when the Flu all but disappeared.

If Republicans were voting to keep the government shutdown, the word “Republican” would be repeated a gazillion times in these fake news stories. But now it’s crickets on who is voting for it.

Yes, that’s the best way to prevent the flu.

Invent another coronavirus strain and flu’s gone!

I’ll stay pure blood as long as possible.

No reason why the state health departments shouldn’t track these illnesses. Enough relying on lying CDC. I still want to know more about virologist Dr. Timothy Cunningham’s passing and why after he angrily stomped out of his office at the CDC a few years ago.

Also FOX and the idiot Republicans need to stop calling it the "Schumer shutdown". Most people think it's the Trump shutdown, they have no idea who the hell Schumer is.

IT'S THE DEMOCRAT SHUTDOWN STUPID!!!

Saltine Crackers. 7-Up. Hot Water Bottle. Chicken Soup. A barf bucket at your side. A shot of Blackberry Brandy* before nap time/bed. Works every time it’s tried! ;)

This also works for Mumps, Measles and Chicken Pox. Been there, done that as a kid. Now hand me my Medical Degree, LOL!
