IBM cutting thousands of jobs in the fourth quarter
CNBC ^ | November 4, 2025 | Jordan Novet

IBM said Tuesday that it will lay off a small percentage of its employees in the current quarter.

“In the fourth quarter we are executing an action that will impact a low single-digit percentage of our global workforce,” a spokesperson told CNBC. “While this may impact some U.S.-based roles, we anticipate that our U.S. employment will remain flat year over year.”

IBM employed 270,000 people at the end of 2024, according to its latest annual report. A 1% cut to headcount would represent the loss of 2,700 jobs.

Other technology companies have been slimming down lately, with executives looking for ways to improve productivity by increasing reliance on artificial intelligence tools.

In October, Amazon said that it would cut 14,000 corporate employees, while Facebook parent Meta

said its AI unit would get rid of 600 workers.

On Oct. 22, IBM delivered stronger earnings than expected, thanks to a 10% jump in revenue from software, meeting consensus.

“...a low single-digit percentage of our global workforce,”

2, 3 and 4 are low single digits as well. Writer assumes ‘1’.

2% would be 5400, 3% = 8100, 4% = 10800.................

IBM is alive and well but joining the chorus of layoffs as layoffs are a symptom of the problem and that problem is not being addressed by Trump even thought he said that was top 4 items to fix.

China. But, get them from 20 or more years ago. Or, see the owner's manual, which is better support than what you can get from the companies that produce the stuff.

More cuts coming from companies stationed in NYC or nearby. IBM is one of them. IBM may be getting ready to move some of their offices and functions out of NY.

Other major companies will exit NYC and surroundings.

Mamdani will sue to keep them in the area, and will ask the laid-off employees to sue IBM and any other company that threatens layoffs or moving out of NY>

IBM still exists? Thought they went the way of DEC.

DEC got bought out ... by Compaq, who in turn got bought out by HP.

IBM did spin off personal computers and Laptops to Lenovo, which has deep connections to the Chicoms.

You don't see IBM as much in day-to-day life because its main presence is in the business/government enterprise. It is no longer the behemoth it once was.

They own a *LOT* of IP...

In a way, they’ve become sort of a financial/tech hybrid. They’re no longer innovators - but they have a ton of assets and they’ve actually done a good job financially managing those assets.

Hey, I’m just a guy on the internet - so my opinion is worth exactly what you pay for it (i,e, nothing) but I think they play their cards well.

Ha! As if you could’ve gotten any attention from IBM customer support back when it was brand new. 😂

My uncle Larry went from a salesman in the 30s to be a VP. He played golf with Watson.

IBM owns Red Hat linux. I saw a video of both CEOs and the head od IBM said if any manager hired a white male, they would be fired.
