National Women’s Soccer League must adopt gender standards to keep growing

When I joined the National Women’s Soccer League 11 years ago, our games were livestreamed to fans on YouTube. Today, our league is halfway through a four-year, $240 million television contract. Our teams are among the most valuable franchises in women’s sports. Yet with this remarkable growth comes an urgent challenge: How do we preserve women’s rights and competitive fairness while fostering meaningful inclusion?

I’m proud to have played a small role in our league’s transformation from struggling startup to supercharged celebrity-maker. I’ve been a part of winning seven titles: three NWSL Championships, three regular-season titles and one International Champions Cup. But I’m concerned that without clarity about who the league is for, it will lose its identity and its momentum.

Recent controversies across women’s sports — from swimming to track and field — have highlighted professional soccer lacks clear eligibility policies, unlike a growing number of other competitions.

Fairness and inclusion are core American values. Reasonable people can disagree about where to draw lines, but avoiding the conversation altogether by shutting out diverse views does not serve us. In fact, we owe it to current and future female athletes to solve this.

The NWSL must adopt a clear standard. One option is all players must be born with ovaries, as the FA requires. Another option is an SRY gene test, like those World Athletics and World Boxing implemented.

She’s touching the third rail, but she’s absolutely right.

The NWSL has a problem. No one in the league is out and proud as a trans woman, but persistent rumors circulate about two of the top players, both from Africa. One at least presents as female socially and in terms of hair and dress. The other has a highly masculine appearance, and certainly looks like a man on the field.

I would emphasize, just for the record, that we are probably in DSD territory here, like Caster Semenya. We are (as far as I know.), NOT talking about a Lia Thomas, woman with a penis, female impersonator. We are probably talking about players with ambiguous external genitalia who passed the eyeball test when born, were identified and raised as female, and who have always played as female. But when puberty hits .. “my, what big biceps you have, my dear.” The DSDs are genetic traits. Geographical clustering would not surprise me. It is what it is, but if they have testicles (undescended) rather than ovaries, if they are anything other than XX females, there’s a problem.

Because they’re both from Africa, the question gets racialized.

The leadership of the NWSL and U.S. Soccer is hopelessly woke. The rest of the international sporting world is starting to get things sorted out. But here, as in academia, the U.S. is increasingly the odd man out.

It would help if people knocked it off about the NWSL being a lesbian league. Most of the players are straight. Many postpone marriage and children until they retire, but pregnancy leave is increasingly common. Several top players are out now because they have their eye on the World Cup schedule and want to start their family now, this year or early next year, so they can play their way back into shape in time to make the World Cup team. At least three or four likely World Cup starters, and a couple of other strong possibilities, are out for this year’s playoffs for this reason. It’s not a gay league; don’t let Megan Rapinoe (now retired), dominate you thinking.

The problem is that leadership of the league and U.S. Soocer are woke sock puppets.

The whole purpose of having separate leagues is so the women can have a chance at sports. Letting men play takes away an opportunity for a woman to have that spot.
