This Is the Way You Beat Trump — and Trumpism
The New York Times ^ | Nov. 2, 2025 | Ezra Klein

Posted on 11/02/2025 11:15:05 AM PST by E. Pluribus Unum

Democrats do not just need to win more people. They also need to win more places.

Inside the Democratic Party — in its backrooms and its group chats, its conferences and its online flame wars — an increasingly bitter debate has taken hold over what the party needs to become to beat back Trumpism. Does it need to be more populist? More moderate? More socialist? Embrace the abundance agenda? Produce more vertical video?

The answer is yes, yes to all of it — but to none of it in particular. The Democratic Party does not need to choose to be one thing. It needs to choose to be more things.

In two days, there will be elections for governor of New Jersey, for mayor of New York City and for governor of Virginia. Democrats are leading in all of these races. As of now, the RealClearPolitics polling averages show the Democrat up by about seven points in Virginia and about three points in New Jersey. These are not unusual leads in what have become reliably Democratic states. You can imagine a world where the violence and corruption of President Trump’s first nine months in office had led to a collapse in support for him and his party. We’ll see what Election Day brings. But we do not look to be in that world.

That’s all the more true if you look a year out, to the midterms. In the RealClearPolitics polling average, Democrats are leading by about 2.5 points when you ask Americans which party they want to see control Congress. At about this time in 2017, Democrats were up just over 10 points in the same average.

The news gets worse. To win the...

Ezra forgot to mention the required Democrat margin-of-cheating.

It wouldn’t hurt to bring a good idea or two to the table.

What these kind of articles always mean is that democrats need to, at least, lie more convincingly about things in way that make people believe they are really doing things for more normal type people instead of wokey nitwits and illegal aliens.

Is that’s the Democrats plan called “gag Karen’s”? Somehow if that’s your guys plan, I don’t think it’s gonna work. Your party has instilled the policy of get in their face and scream and yell and stomp your feet! Now you’re telling them they got to cool it for a while? I mean, they were saving planet, they were saving humanity, and they were saving democracy! WTF libs!

“It needs to choose to be more things.”

LOL...in other words, it needs to stand for nothing. No core principles or beliefs other than raw power at all costs, including the loss of the Republic.

“ You can imagine a world where the violence and corruption of President Trump’s first nine months in office had led to a collapse in support for him and his party.”

Em…Ezra. The republican establishment in New York, New Jersey and Virginia lay no claim to Trump. They deny him like there’s a rooster marching around cooing

Trump is not on the ballot in Virginia. Sears has not asked Trump to campaign with her.

Cathey mayoral race in New York City has never uttered the name Trump, even though his mark, his name, his heritage, his family are all New Horkers. Of the NYC type

Ciatarelli no mention of Trump

If anyone of these losers had asked Trump to assist he would have rallied for them. He’d have put them way into 2 digits ahead

Then you could legitimately lay claim to democrat victory over Trump

You’ll do it anyway, for the next year. But it won’t be legitimate

And you know it. It’s why you’re whining about Trump

The problem is you as a party are done. You are out

You would need to embrace law and order and the constitution. Get acquainted with the Declaration of Independence. But you won’t

Next, the judicywill get cleaned up. That will be the knell

My guess is they’ll opt for more socialism, since that’s where their heart is, even the moderates. They’ll propose more handouts and social programs and wrap it in populist sounding language to out-Trump Trump.

It wouldn’t hurt to bring a good idea or two to the table.

Most of the "good ideas" from the democRATS are ways to line their own pockets.

They just need “better messaging”.

Those three elections are in traditional democrat strongholds. That they are even close is what has democrats terrified.

It is working for the Deep State in Germany. Anyone running for office in the German AfD party is fair game. Many have "passed away" recently.

Ok. I’m late editing that wordy piece:

“You can imagine a world where the violence and corruption of President Trump’s first nine months in office had led to a collapse in support for him and his party.”

Em…Ezra. The republican establishment in New York, New Jersey and Virginia lay no claim to Trump. They deny him. They distance themselves from him. Republicans hate Trump especially in blue and more so in purple states

Trump is not on the ballot in Virginia. Sears has not asked Trump to campaign with her.

The mayoral race in New York City has never uttered the name Trump, even though his mark, his name, his heritage, his family are all New Horkers. Of the NYC type

Ciatarelli could have, should have but has made no mention of Trump. That’s too bad. new Jerseyans who love Trump love him. See notes on last year’s Trump rally at Wildwood

If anyone of these losers had asked Trump to assist he would have rallied for them. He’d have put them way into 2 digits ahead

If Trump we’re involved in any of these races and the candidate lost, then you could legitimately lay claim to democrat victory over Trump

You’ll do it anyway, for the next year. But it won’t be legitimate

And you know it. It’s why you’re whining about Trump. The dems are losing and close to it without even having Trump in person. America is done with the gaslighting and ripoff. The criminality of the leaders

The problem is you as a party are done. You are out

You would need to embrace law and order and the constitution. Get acquainted with the Declaration of Independence. But you won’t

Next, the judiciary will get cleaned up. That will be the knell

the internet is rife with these kinds of articles and they all mean one thing: publicly, the Democrats don’t actually stand for anything except whatever expediency they think is most likely to get them elected at the next election ... if/when they obtain power, it’ll be a different story, and that story will be Bidenism raised to the nth degree ...

Yeah, except that crime and corruption was a 99% democrat creation. Details matter, Ezra.

No. The way forward is to set aside the petty ignorant violent liberal agenda and start working tog3ther with repubkicans to show people thwt you are more concern3d about this nwtiin than you are in s8mply opposing Trump and repubilicans 24/7 no matter what the issue is!

I can freely give this advice because i know democrats are so entrenched in bitterness, hatred, violent ideology, and an ignorant opposition agenda that they are blinded to common sense and they will NEVER change! They will n3ver understand that it is far better to put others first if you wqnt to win over others!

I’m not willing to register to read the article, but I imagine I know its content. This is actually the winning strategy: as happened after the McGovern electoral debacle of 1972, and as Clinton did with the Democrats Leadership Council, put the loonies back in their cages and ditch their policies. Run fake moderate candidates but at least ones that aren’t commies and/ or Islamists. Leadership is running out of time; the insurgents have every intention of overthrowing the party leadership. Use your power before you lose it to get the maniacs under control
