Obamacare enrollee sees premium spike over 300% as sign-up period begins: 'This will devastate us'
ABC News | Disney ^ | November 1, 2025 | ByJustin Gomez

Stacy Cox used one word repeatedly as she described how she felt after learning her ACA premium could jump over 300% without the enhanced tax credits: "devastating."

"I don't know if I've ever cried opening a letter from an insurance or before, but it happened this time," she told ABC News.

Cox's premium this year has been $495.32 for coverage for her and her husband. Without the credit in 2026, she was informed that it's increasing to $2,168.68.

"It's devastating because we can't afford that," she said. "Just that bill right there, that's more than our mortgage, our insurance, most of our food. That's what we're paying per month to live. We can't afford to double what it costs for us to live just to have health insurance."

"This will devastate us if we tried to pay it," she added.

Millions across the country are discovering just how much their plans will cost as open enrollment for Affordable Care Act insurance plans began on Nov. 1. Enrollment lasts through Jan. 15, 2026.

For Cox and her husband, who live in Kanab, Utah, even if the tax credit were to be extended, they'd still see the premium increase to $753.68. It would be a hit to their budget, but one they would take to keep insurance.

"It's already going to be hard for us to have a 52% increase on our premium, and that's if the credits are extended," she said. "But we will do it so that we can have health coverage."

Cox is a professional photographer and she and her husband, 55, have been enrolled in "Obamacare" since 2022.

For now, she's holding on to hope that the tax credits are extended and will reenroll in her plan so she doesn't miss open enrollment.

Shut down Medicaid and roll that into ACA. Save endless billions right there. Medicaid SUCKS all over anyway, all you’ll get are ghetto doctors. Whole thing is a giant mess.

Bring back the free market and end this socialist experiment.

You can't "bring back" what never existed.

The cost of health care has long been distorted by insurance regulations (much of it lobbied for by insurance companies), AMA lobbying (e.g. licensing requirements, limiting the number of medical schools. etc,), Medicare, Medicaid, SSI...

They want free health care.

They want to pay a few bucks for "insurance" and receive million dollar care in return.

“Dryer, from Norfolk, Virginia, is the executive director of 757 Creative ReUse Center, a nonprofit art supply store, and in 2015 she was paying just shy of $80 for her premium....

“OK, so it looks like the same plan that I have this year would now be $425.03 a month next year, which is completely out of my budget.”

Well, maybe it is time to STOP BEING THE EXECUTIVE DIRECTOR OF A NON-PROFIT “CREATIVE RE-USE CENTER” and find a real job!

And let’s look again. In 10 years time, from 2015 to 2026, her premium will have gone for $50 to $425. What does she think HONEST PEOPLE pay?

“”The Republicans aren’t going to budge on the tax credits, and they’re happy to watch people die. I mean, that’s essentially what it is,” she said.”

GAG! What a piece of shiite.

Then look elsewhere. That’s not a “credit”; its a subsidy. And tax payers are not responsible for it.

ACA is and always was a flat out lie.

Health insurance is a massive scam period. I have BCBS basic for the wife and I at $600 a month plus Medicare at $350 a month I’m guessing it’ll be over a grand for both in 2026. Asinine...$12k a year and we’re never sick.

I was paying 750 just for myself not on obamacare, so I don’t get what these people are griping about.

Earlier in Autopen's first term subsidies were extended beyond the 400% poverty level cutoff so that nobody would spend more than 8.5% of their income on healthcare. That expired and and now the couple mentioned in the article can no longer afford the premiums.

Tell “that couple” to grow up.

Exactly. MediShare is a great way to go. Just eschew street drugs and sex with those you are not married to.

Yup. We told you so. 300% premium increase without a subsidy is not a subsidy. It’s outright Democrat vote buying. Not to mention the eligibility for Obamacare includes people who should be able pay for their own insurance.

I’ve been on Medicare for a couple of years, so I thought I would check the KFF subsidy calculator. A single 64 year old and not eligible for subsidies, the cost would be $35K for a silver plan or $21K for a Bronze plan. Double those figures for a married couple..

>>I’ve been on Medicare for a couple of years, so I thought I would check the KFF subsidy calculator.

I just checked that thing, and it says my cost would be under $200 a month. I started my own business so I don’t get a massive subsidy. My wife is gets Medicare as she’s older than I am.

Since I left my corporate job at 54(pushed out), I’ve had a catastrophic garbage bronze plan that I pay around $200/month for right now. I don’t use it, it’s just there in case I get hit by a truck.

I checked and the same plan will now be around $450/month. I.e. $5400 annually so I don’t go bankrupt. I’m 58 now and in reasonable health, I don’t take any meds. I’m just annoyed that I have to have this absolute shit coverage for $5400/year. There is some subsidy being paid too, so Florida Blue is making bank on me.

Keep an eye on it and plan to adjust your 2026 income if subsides levels fall back to under 400% of the poverty level.

My brother always used the VA for his medical needs. When he turned 65 he didn’t sign up for Medicare because he used the VA. A couple years later he wasn’t getting the care he should have gotten with the VA due to poorly run clinic in his area so signed up for Medicare in order to go to regular doctors. He pays extra every month for the late sign up penalty. And he has to pay that extra until he dies. This all happened while Obama was still in office.

What do you mean you can’t afford it, Stacy. It’s right there in the name. The Affordable Care Act. Democrats wouldn’t lie about that.
