Stacy Cox used one word repeatedly as she described how she felt after learning her ACA premium could jump over 300% without the enhanced tax credits: "devastating."
"I don't know if I've ever cried opening a letter from an insurance or before, but it happened this time," she told ABC News.
Cox's premium this year has been $495.32 for coverage for her and her husband. Without the credit in 2026, she was informed that it's increasing to $2,168.68.
"It's devastating because we can't afford that," she said. "Just that bill right there, that's more than our mortgage, our insurance, most of our food. That's what we're paying per month to live. We can't afford to double what it costs for us to live just to have health insurance."
"This will devastate us if we tried to pay it," she added.
Millions across the country are discovering just how much their plans will cost as open enrollment for Affordable Care Act insurance plans began on Nov. 1. Enrollment lasts through Jan. 15, 2026.
For Cox and her husband, who live in Kanab, Utah, even if the tax credit were to be extended, they'd still see the premium increase to $753.68. It would be a hit to their budget, but one they would take to keep insurance.
"It's already going to be hard for us to have a 52% increase on our premium, and that's if the credits are extended," she said. "But we will do it so that we can have health coverage."
Cox is a professional photographer and she and her husband, 55, have been enrolled in "Obamacare" since 2022.
For now, she's holding on to hope that the tax credits are extended and will reenroll in her plan so she doesn't miss open enrollment.

good, exposes the LIE that Obamacare was ever “affordable”. Bring back the free market and end this socialist experiment.
If you like your bankruptcy attorney, you can keep your bankruptcy attorney...
Tell it to your boy Obama. It was he and the insurance companies who lured your keisters in.
Call on Zer0 to pay for what he wrought….
So she's going to pay what insurance actually costs instead of sticking it on the taxpayers. $1000 per month per person is about what mine costs. Fortunately my employer takes some of my labor to pay for most of mine before they write down the gross pay.
Has Stacy tried private health insurance companies?
That is the real cost. This obnoxious person cries because other taxpayers won’t pick up the tab for her.
Fantasy liberal program meets reality with predictable results.
No shiite sherlock. Thank you zer0.
Obamacare was always about imposing single payer healthcare they just started with Obamacare to get people used to the govt running their healthcare it’s all by design
The Government has nothing to "give you". To do so it must take it from someone else first, take their cut, then find two more taxpayers in 2072 to fund your Obamacare ACA Plan. Same with food, housing, education, travel, and such. They cannot give you something they take from others. They are not your friend. The sooner you untangle your life choices from government sponsorship for those choices, the happier you will be. (Hint....they don't want you happy. They need you to be desperate)
It did the same thing to health insurance it did to student loans. There was no "student loan crisis" prior to the ACA/Obamacare nationalizing student loans.
Oh quit your whining, we all have to make a sacrifce so the "refugees" can have health insurance.
The GOPe/uniparty will do exactly the same thing as they did in President Trump’s first term when they controlled everything. Absolutely nothing, well maybe some lip service.
Well, lets just get rid of it, then.
The reason her jump is so high is she’s a high risk breast cancer individual.
I was paying 750 just for myself not on obamacare, so I don’t get what these people are griping about. Then I went with Medishare and it was about $250 a month.
This just shows it was all a lie. Without everyone else subsidizing these peoples premiums and they are expected to foot their bills, it never was affordable. It was just supplemented by other people.
Just wait until the "advance tax credit game" catches up with reality.Youre really using pay-day loans to buy health insurance for $2400 a month but don't know it yet. I can't wait until filing season in Jan-Feb-March. Tamarquius and Laquita won't be getting those big o'l refund checks anymore. As a matter of fact, they could very easily end up owing back tens of thousands of dollars.
You definitely need the national guard then. Hey,.....I think I just figured something out??!!
