Rose Bowl files lawsuit against UCLA for allegedly trying to move games out of historic stadium

The city of Pasadena, California, and the Rose Bowl Operating Company have reportedly sued UCLA for allegedly trying to move its college football games from one of the sport's most iconic stadiums to the much newer SoFi Stadium.

The Times reported UCLA’s outside counsel, David L. Schrader, sent a letter to Pasadena attorney Nima Mohebbi in March, saying the school’s efforts to conduct "preliminary discussions" about relocating games did not constitute a "material breach" of its contract.

"The potential economic and reputational damage of UCLA's attempt to break its lease is significant to the Rose Bowl Stadium, Pasadena residents, and the local and regional economy."

UCLA's current lease runs through 2044, but the stadium is 26 miles from campus, while SoFi Stadium, which opened in 2020, is about 12 miles away.

Honest question if anyone knows... Does any D1 college football team play its home games further away, in terms of travel time, from its home campus than UCLA does with the Rose Bowl?

Even with zero traffic, we’re talking about 35 minutes point to point. Realistically, though, SoCal traffic jams on a Saturday afternoon can double or triple the drive time. SoFi Stadium ain’t exactly close to Westwood either, but it is closer... I can imagine folks getting from the UCLA campus to SoFi in maybe half or 2/3rds the time it might take to get to Pasadena.

That’s what happens when one rests upon their laurels.
Roses don’t smell as sweet as money.

I doubt they can make it on revenues from an annual football bowl game. The Rose Bowl isn’t what it was because college football isn’t what it was. White America isn’t having enough kids to make the Parade the pilgrimage it was. And so on.

Yeah, it’s all sad. We’ll see if LA can take down Pasadena.
They’re surely working on it.

The way UCLA has been playing, I would think the Rose Bowl would want to kick them out.

In general, gambling is ruining sports.

All games are rigged.

Every other tradition in college football is smashed to pieces, so why not this change, too.

I took my son to the Stanford / Florida State game at Stanford University a couple weeks ago. Live college football is awful these days.

I remember wonderful days watching Mezzo play on warm fall afternoons with all the pomp and pageantry in the late 60s and early 70s. Simple settings, fast play, no TV timeouts, no thundering sound systems, no flashing lights, no replays, excellent marching bands, the Mezzo “Golden Girls” cheer squad. It was the midwest regional Big 8 conference and you played teams from neighboring states. No players were paid — they were all amateurs. Those days were great.

Things have gone so far down in collegiate athletics. Money ruins everything.

So go ahead and move the Rose Bowl game out of the Rose Bowl. Who cares? The traditional bowl games (Sugar, Cotton, Orange, and Rose) are meaningless these days, anyway.

UCLA already has a 11,000 capacity track stadium on campus. A new 60 000 seat stadium costs between 3 000 and 5 000 bucks a seat...180 to 300 mill... Use that stadium (ducky drake) as a basis for expansion..
100 bucks extra tuition costs or get rid of BS DEI, AND lame majors, could free up about 5 million per year (UCLA has 48 000 students per year). Ticket sales of about 600 bucks per year(6 games) times 60 000 is 36 mill. Parking, merchandise , and concessions could be a few million also. Add sponsorship/advertising revenue and TV contracts could be a total income of about 50 mill. A year. Could pay off the stadium in 6 to 10 years. All one needs is approval by dumb as rocks l.a. council buffoons and it could happen.
Uh, don’t forget to play better and more consistently,eh?

UCLA...You Clowns Lost Again?

21ST century solution - UCLA moves to Las Vegas and builds a new stadium there. Using taxpayer money, of course.

For those of you in Rio Linda, SoFi Stadium is considered a home stadium of the 49ers, because whenever they play there they have more fans than the opposing team. Also called Levi’s South.

The Rose bowl opened in 1922 - and despite some renovations, is an outdated structure - might as well have the players wear the old leather helmets when they play there...the newer stadium is better for the players and, even more so - the fans....

They bulldozed the Sugar Bowl a generation ago. The Cotton Bowl isn’t played in the Cotton Bowl (although the Texas - OU game still is). And the Orange Bowl isn’t played in the Orange Bowl. Time for the Rose Bowl to catch up.

UCLA, in the interests of staying woke should move UCLA football to Sofi stadium, tear down the Rose Bowl and build public housing there. Everyone wins, especially citizens living in the area. Based on their voting habits, they would love those who move into public housing there. They can become neighbors.

“Sorry, wrong posting by me.”

Comment might still apply. UCLA…. Just saying…

Car guy, David Freiburger, just did driving trip video where he gives a little bit of history on the Rose Bowl Stadium. It’s very early in the video, and reveals the Rose Bowl Stadium as an early motor sports venue.
