California Governor Gavin Newsom is giving Planned Parenthood another $140 million in taxpayer money, to show support for the abortion corporation and keep its doors open. But even this amount of money may not guarantee that.

Gov. Newsom's abortion funding plan is a reaction to the one-year federal Medicaid defunding of Planned Parenthood by the Trump administration, but it's just the latest in his legislative support for abortion and Planned Parenthood, which recently announced it would be ending many of its primary care services in the southern part of the state. Planned Parenthood of Orange and San Bernardino Counties (PPOSBC) will still be committing abortions after it closes down nine of its Melody Health primary care clinics. But that seems to be okay with Newsom.

"California is a reproductive freedom state," he said. "Trump's efforts to defund Planned Parenthood put all our communities at risk as people seek basic health care from these community providers."

Abortion is not a treatment for any health condition. It is the direct, intentional, and unnecessary killing of a preborn human being. Planned Parenthood claims that the defunding means "cancers go undetected, STIs go untreated, birth control isn't available, and patients must travel farther and wait longer for care."

However, Planned Parenthood is completely replaceable. Research has shown that for every one Planned Parenthood, there are 15 community health centers that offer women's health care and don't commit abortions. In 2024, federally qualified health centers provided more than 87 times the number of prenatal care services as Planned Parenthood did. No one needs Planned Parenthood for health care. It's an abortion business, and Planned Parenthood all but admits this.

In describing its current fundraising campaign amid its primary care closures, PPOSBC said, "The Community Action Fund of PPOSBC is firm in our commitment to the fight for reproductive rights. We are fighting harder than ever, and strategically working to unseat anti-abortion elected officials in the 2026 midterm elections. We need you to join this fight so we can ensure that every person in our community has the freedom to access reproductive health care," it said.

There's nothing in there about primary care. Just as Newsom spoke only of abortion as his reason for giving Planned Parenthood another $140 million, Planned Parenthood makes it clear that it will fight for abortion, not true health care.

Newsom isn't the only California politician throwing support behind Planned Parenthood, mainly for its abortion services. Senate President pro Tempore Mike McGuire praised the $140 million promise to Planned Parenthood, saying, “This investment will provide women the safe access to abortion care and contraception they need to thrive.”

And Assembly Speaker Robert Rivas said, “California will always fight for women’s reproductive freedom with everything we’ve got.”

Again, nothing was said about actual health care.

Reality Check:

The truth is, Planned Parenthood's one-year loss of Medicaid funding was not the catalyst for Planned Parenthood to shutter clinics and scale back its health care services. It's been doing this for more than a decade.

In 2016, Live Action News reported that Planned Parenthood was closing its facilities that didn't commit abortions — while the abortion supportive President Obama was in office. And in 2018, Live Action News reported that an Idaho Planned Parenthood was dropping primary health services but keeping abortion.

Many of the closings are part of a business plan to move out of brick-and-mortar medicine and into telemedicine, including online abortion pill sales. For example, Planned Parenthood of Greater Texas closed its 78,000-square-foot mega-center and now has two telehealth options: a Virtual Health Center and the PP Direct app.

Live Action research fellow Carole Novielli has reported for years that Planned Parenthood's health care services have been declining as its number of abortions has been rising.

The Bottom Line:

Nothing about the Planned Parenthood closures is new, and throwing millions more taxpayer dollars at it as a show of support is likely not going to reopen primary care facilities or reverse the closure trend. It's all part of the abortion corporation's business plan to grow abortion numbers and reduce overhead costs by selling the abortion pill online and closing physical centers.

But it has found success in fundraising when it lies about its reasons for closing facilities and pretends that it is worried about women's health when what it cares most about is abortion, its cash cow.
