Some airlines are stepping in to help feed air traffic controllers and other unpaid federal aviation workers who missed their first full paycheck on Tuesday, Day 28 of the government shutdown.
United Airlines told CBS News that it is helping support essential workers who are going unpaid during the stalemate in Washington, D.C.

That would solve this problem. Government has too much direct control over everything. In a sane world air traffic controllers paychecks wouldn't have anything at all to do with government.
The argument for Gov control in the first place is private entities would have a profit motive to hire under-qualified workers or under-staff the tower. Given the government has already done both those things, I see absolutely no downside to letting airports own air traffic control.
Good time to privatize the entire system.
So all these controllers have absolutely nothing in the cupboard or in the bank and no relatives and friends. What a lot of BS.
Isn’t it bad enough that the ATCs are unpaid, must they really be punished with airline food too??
Its an interesting arrangement.
Let the airlines pay them too, and see what happens.
Fixed it.
This "news" is just MSM putsching the same old story into the news cycles.
Does everyone in this country live hand to mouth? What happened to saving something for a rainy day?
With air traffic slowly grinding to a halt, it’s time to nuke the 60 vote filibuster hurdle and pass the clean CR that the Republicans claim to want.
What, no 30 state lawsuit against Trump to pay air traffic controllers.
Again looks like the dems only cater to those they actually oppress when they say they are supporting.
Don’t eat the fish!
So the Air Traffic Controllers are forced to eat the airline’s lousy pretzels?
another compassionate curmudgeon thread.
One of the funniest spontaneous moments of my life. Airplane was the farthest thing from my mind. Took a paper into my boss and said “What can you make of this?” without missing a beat, with the appropriate gestures, she said “well, I can make a hat, or a broach, or a pterodactyl.” I thought I was going to die laughing
They are literally working for peanuts.
This is ridiculous. ATCs make at least $150k a yr and many have pensions from the military. The idea that they haven’t put away substantial amounts of money over the yrs is ludicrous.
There is always the soup line.
“ATCs make at least $150k a yr and many have pensions from the military”
That is BS. A starting certified ATC at a smaller airport makes about $60,000 to start. As they move up in experience and transfer to larger airports, their salary increases. $150,000 is midrange for someone with years of experience working at a larger airport. Most ATC’s are not working at large airports. The military does not turn out many ATC’s so the bulk of them are civilian hires that go through a pretty rigorous process to get certified. I doubt that 1 out of a hundred people could get certified. It is an unbelievably stressful job in busy airspace.
How many have military pensions? Probably none. Commercial ATC folks have to be early 30s to apply. Military pensions don’t kick in majority of the time until after 20 years of active duty. So falsehood/lie to state they have pensions. Why say such falsehoods?
