Ukraine’s GOP allies look to seize Trump’s momentum versus Putin

Trump’s announcement Wednesday evening that he was, for the first time, imposing sanctions on Russia was welcomed by Kyiv and its supporters, signalling that Trump was turning away from his appeals to Putin in favor of a pressure campaign to reach a ceasefire in Ukraine.

Senate Republicans and Democrats are laying the groundwork to hammer Putin with a slew of other sanctions.

The Senate Foreign Relations Committee on Wednesday advanced a trio of bills meant to punish Russia and its enablers. This includes labeling Russia a State Sponsor of Terrorism for its abduction of Ukrainian children; strengthening the U.S. ability to seize frozen Russian assets; and sanctions authority to target Chinese enablers of Russia’s military.

There is only one thing that can stop Russia’s advance.

These other measures are useless and will fail.

The UK and France will have a decision to make about this. I doubt Graham can persuade Trump to do it. The UK and France might, provided they could get a statement from Trump saying he will use nukes should they be hit in retaliation.

Or they can just try to force his hand by not consulting with him before using nukes in the Donbas, without his permission.

Now that is an interesting scenario. Nuke 75,000 Russian troops and announce to the world that if Paris and London are hit, Article 5 triggers the whole Shebang.

France and the UK both have theatre nukes. Nothing else will stop Russia, so the question is do the really care about all of this, enough to use those nukes, or not.

It’s a decision. There are reports today of France preparing to deploy troops, under the French flag, to Ukraine in 2026. That will not suffice. They must use their nukes.

If they don’t really care, then they will not.

The only thing comparable in my lifetime(54 years) is covid and the hysteria around it.

Neither Russia, the US, or any nuclear power has or is going to launch any nuclear weapons over Ukraine.
I doubt and sincerely hope no one on this forum has nuclear weapons of their to make their fantasies of nuclear escalantion come true.
