Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent says a deal to keep TikTok operating in the U.S is set to be finalized on Thursday when President Donald Trump is scheduled to meet with Chinese President Xi Jinping.
Speaking Sunday on CBS News' "Face the Nation," Bessent said the two sides came to an agreement during a recent meeting in Madrid.
"I believe that as of today, all the details are ironed out, and that will be for the two leaders to consummate that transaction on Thursday in Korea," he said.
Bessent was speaking from Malaysia, where he joined President Trump on his three-country Asia trade tour. President Trump is scheduled to meet with China's President Xi on Thursday at the annual summit of the Association of Southeast Asian Nations, hosted by Malaysia.
IN CASE YOU MISSED IT | Trump extends deadline for TikTok ban, keeping the app available in the US for now
The TikTok announcement comes a month after President Trump signed an executive order allowing TikTok to fall under American ownership and continue operating in the U.S. — essentially saying the deal satisfies a law that requires ByteDance, TikTok’s Chinese parent company, to divest from the popular video-sharing app.
Lawmakers passed the bipartisan measure, citing concerns that the Chinese government could compel the company to hand over U.S. user data or manipulate TikTok’s algorithm to influence public opinion.
The new deal is expected to create a new joint venture to run TikTok, partly owned by U.S. investors and its parent company, ByteDance, which could hold no more than a 20% stake. The White House says the new joint venture would be run by a U.S.-based...

It is a terrible idea. It was also terrible when it was China. Tik Tok disaster.
I wish more time was spent lowering all prescription costs and fixing health insurance instead of this crap.
You are comparing apples and oranges-the Tik Tok deal is a simple business transaction. The prescription drug prices are already being addressed, but that is more than a business deal, too-it is decades of a mess to be unraveled.
Health insurance is an even bigger mess-and not a business deal-the only fix for that is to get govt hands out of it entirely, and let the insurance carriers sell the consumer what they want-not what govt wants them to have-the govt is not your mommy...
The drug prices so far only involve a couple companies. A person doesn’t care if they do not need any. I get that. But if they do, it is important.
I have been complaining about the government being involved in healthcare for many years. I am old enough to remember when they had little involvement.
I do not need cheesy insults about government not being my mommy.
That said, it took acts of government to create all these
messes and it is going to take acts of government to fix it.
Frankly I am not impressed, nor do I give a rats arse, about Tik Tok. Government shouldn’t be involved in any of that either.
The mommy comment was not directed at you-it encompasses those who believe that govt can solve all their issues-like mommy. I also remember when govt got involved in health insurance and health care-and my dad saying that a huge fustercluck was going to result in no time at all-he was right...
While it is true that I do not use any drugs-by personal choice as I am a naturalist-I don’t think that price gouging should go on-hopefully more companies will reduce prices-it will happen fast if they move their production back here from India and China. I don’t think it is safe to use drugs from those countries-who knows what they might really contain? it isn’t like China hasn’t sent us something harmful already-like the wuflu...
I’d rather see govt involved in a business deal than that abomination called Obamacare-or any health care or insurance matter-decades of that is why it is far more expensive than is logical...
