Trump blasts 'dirty play' by Ontario in waiting to pause Reagan trade ad after World Series
CNBC ^ | October 24, 2025 | Dan Mangan

President Donald Trump late Friday blasted the Ontario provincial government in Canada for waiting until after the first two games of the World Series to pause a television ad featuring former President Ronald Reagan criticizing tariffs.

"They could have pulled it tonight," Trump told reporters at the White House as he headed to fly to Asia.

"Well, that's dirty play," he said. "But I can play dirtier than they can, you know."

Trump had cited the ad in his decision on Thursday night to trade negotiations with Canada.

Ontario Premier Doug Ford on Friday afternoon said he would pause the ad on Monday so that trade talks could resume.

But Ford also said, "I've directed my team to keep putting our message in front of Americans over the weekend so that we can air our commercial during the first two World Series games."

Trump said Friday night that he had heard that Ontario was pulling the ad.

But he also said he did not know the government was leaving it on until Monday.

The ad was shown Friday night during a broadcast to millions of Americans of the first game of the World Series.

Is there a version of this story written by a professional journalist?

… As perhaps you’ve heard, last week I placed new duties on some Japanese products in response to Japan’s inability to enforce their trade agreement with us on electronic devices called semiconductors. Now, imposing such tariffs or trade barriers and restrictions of any kind are steps that I am loath to take. And in a moment, I’ll mention the sound economic reasons for this: that over the long run such trade barriers hurt every American worker and consumer. But the Japanese semiconductors were a special case. We had clear evidence that Japanese companies were engaging in unfair trade practices that violated an agreement between Japan and the United States. We expect our trading partners to live up to their agreements. As I’ve often said: Our commitment to free trade is also a commitment to fair trade.

But you know, in imposing these tariffs we were just trying to deal with a particular problem, not begin a trade war. So, next week I’ll be giving Prime Minister Nakasone this same message: We want to continue to work cooperatively on trade problems and want very much to lift these trade restrictions as soon as evidence permits. We want to do this, because we feel both Japan and the United States have an obligation to promote the prosperity and economic development that only free trade can bring. Now, that message of free trade is one I conveyed to Canada’s leaders a few weeks ago, and it was warmly received there. …
Of course, Doug Ford feels no shame over taking Reagan completely out of context, just as the US left did with this very same radio address when Trump first imposed tariffs earlier this year and all the while predicting disaster. Ford has to learn the hard way, as the “effay-effoh” principle starts to bite.

Maybe Trump can declare a nasty trade war against the Canadians and a hockey game will break out. ⛸️⛸️🏒🏒🥅

Trump should interrupt the ad with a National Emergency and declare war on Ontario!

On a personal level as well as on the behalf of the whatever number of other Ontarians who see through this nonsense aimed at the gullible and stupid who are mainly in the GTA, I apologize for this silly and unnecessary embarrassment.

While ending trade with Canada, President Trump has his people hard at work promoting and actually facilitating trade with the WEXIT provinces.

Canada was. WEXIT is

WEXIT is Alberta, Saskatchewan, Manitoba, BC and maybe Yukon. In some fashion they may become an American Territory pending statehood.

Showing you don’t know much about Canada.

Only Alberta shows the slightest signs of moderate or slightly conservative leanings. But even there they have a history of voting the extreme left NDP into power in the past. Present Premier (=US governor) Danielle Smith is a refreshing conservative leaning leader, but they are trying to toss her.

British Columbia is as loony left as Washington, Oregon, and California.

Saskatchewan and Manitoba are like Colorado, left leaning, but not as far down the socialist path as BC and Ontario. Their senators if a US state would always be moderate democrats of the Joe Manchin type, never a conservative.

“While ending trade with Canada, President Trump has his people hard at work promoting and actually facilitating trade with the WEXIT provinces.”

What about the person who has to live paycheck to paycheck being told by Trump to suck it up. The small business going month to month who Trump says “eat the Tariffs”?

The matter is all about trade. As territorial status and selling oil, phosphate, Chemicals, minerals, timber etc the politics is not so important as you infer.

The driving force that seems to be applied by the President is trade.

I do not believe statehood can be accomplished any time soon. Territorial status is however another matter.

Trump should preempt the next world series game on Canada TV for about two hours to tell our side of this.

One thing to keep in mind. You can’t transfer Constitutional responsibilities between branches, otherwise, there could a come a president where the USSC and Congress says “we are giving our power to this man”.

Excuse me. POTUS never took that dismissive attitude. He is working to help the sectors of our economy that are experiencing short term pain during the realignment, for example the farmers.
What is your solution? Do you advocate USA becoming weaker, losing more industry, supporting the building of China’s army & Canada’s economy? Do you support our Country being vulnerable to blackmail, squeeze plays or defenseless during a war?
The pain is not falling equally on all Americans but that is the fault of Biden & Congress through years of neglect and pursuit of graft.

That time has come & gone. Congress has designated many of their responsibilities to the executive. Given the reality of Congress’ inability to fulfill it’s responsibilities in a timely fashion, as a unified body or in many cases at all that is a good thing. It would be dangerous for Congress to have responsibility for anything requiring decisive and immediate action. Their laziness and dithering over years has caused the security issues Trump is responding to.
Trump is using trade in the interests of National security which is well within his enumerated powers.

Declare the Mariners Champions and don’t let either team cross the border. Trade includes MLB and all the money the Series would have brought to our socialist neighbors.

I thought it was illegal for foreign nations to advertise in US media on issues related to US government policy or elections.
