Massie says 'Beef USA' are selling out farmers while pretending to support them
X ^ | 23 Oct | Rep. Thomas Massie

@MassieforKY

I tell it like it is. Here’s a group of lobbyists in DC who sell out farmers while pretending to support them.

@BeefUSA supports electronic tags on livestock, opposes country of origin labeling, is against checkoff reform, & won’t lift a finger to help farmers sell beef locally.

The meatpackers control the @beefusa and the majority of cost consumers pay for beef products goes to the meatpackers. IIRC processing is controlled by three major corporations, two of which are foreign owned. Our family farmers and ranchers are being sold out.

Big agriculture lobby is not pro farmer.

I don’t think it ever has been actually.

There's the problem right there. It's the same with airlines, cell phones, etc.

Most US industry needs some real anti-trust action. And they need to start charging corporate execs who hire illegals as well.

The managerial class in this country, whether it's the Federal bureaucrats, schools, universities or corporate execs feels free to violate every law with impunity.

My family has sheep farmers. If you go by the price of lamb in the stores/restaurants, you’d think my family was making a small fortune. The farmer is the last on the totem pole of money making, at least where sheep are concerned.

The antitrust laws have not been enforced whether Democrats or Republicans are in charge. I would like to see a study showing industry concentration in 1960 vs. 2025.

BeefUSA can only sell out farmers to the extent that the scum in the House abs Senate execute the selling out.

Yes, he does, and in the tweet that was posted he criticized BeefUSA for opposing it.

Lobbying should be a felony.

I oppose any congress critter and any business that opposes country of origin labeling. Why would they not want me to know that an item of food comes from China?

27 states have their own meat processing inspection programs that are a fraction of the cost of USDA but most producers don’t utilize them. It’s easier to haul them off to the livestock auction and get $2-6/lb.

https://www.fsis.usda.gov/inspection/state-inspection-programs/states-and-without-inspection-programs

I have a farm near me that were MO licensed and sold beef at their farm and prices were within $1-2/lb of the store. Problem is, they couldn’t produce enough to guarantee availability to supply grocery stores. Even if they did, most grocery stores are regional chains that have stores in 2-3 states and the meat can only be sold in MO.

They just became USDA licensed but I don’t know what their new business model is going to be. I doubt they’ll be $1-2 within grocery store prices or if they plan to continue selling from the farm. They’ll probably do what a lot of them do. Get a fancy website, do some “wholesome” marketing aka virtue signaling and sell “grass fed beef” to well off people for $40/lb.

Since more than half the states have inspection programs equal to USDA without the insane cost, there should be a way they can sell in any state. Massie’s PRIME Act does that.

Since it’s interstate commerce, the fed wants to be involved. Fine, shrink the USDA inspection to just a few people making sure the state inspection programs are up to par. Not a full time inspector at every processing plant.

Missouri small animal livestock auction report(prices are per 100#) - https://mymarketnews.ams.usda.gov/filerepo/sites/default/files/1833/2025-10-12/1279771/ams_1833_00300.pdf

Feeder lambs that will be quickly fattened up and slaughtered. Average weight 30-45 lbs. Price $2-3/lb.

Beef report - https://mymarketnews.ams.usda.gov/filerepo/sites/default/files/1821/2025-10-12/1279797/ams_1821_00336.pdf

Two business models mostly. Sell at auction for $2-6/lb and the meat ends up in grocery stores with $20/lb ribeye/t-bone or get USDA licensed, get a fancy website and sell grass fed direct for $40/lb.

I haven’t had a ribeye or t-bone in years. Can’t afford it. There’s one discount grocery store here that sells both USA beef and Mexico beef labeled as such at about half the price. Tried it once. It was worth half the price.

I just bought some casings and will be taking up sausage making. Cheap ground meat made yummy. Not big on pork otherwise. I like calf/beef liver too and that’s cheap, flavorful and chewable. Pot roast. Getting sick of chicken. Been eating more fish but it’s hard to get USA caught.

And Big Agriculture controls the Department of Agriculture. We should get rid of DOA.

Notice how Massie is taking a break from his All-Epstein-All-The-Time jihad and suddenly inserting himself into the beef issue.

Why? Because Trump is focused on it. Whatever Trump is doing, Massie will position himself to cause problems for Trump.

This is what a paid agent does, not an ally.
