‘Cruel to families’: 2,300 vulnerable Kansas City children at risk amid government shutdown

KANSAS CITY, Mo. (KCTV) - Nearly 2,300 Kansas City children are the latest at risk in the government shutdown.

Head Start, a federally funded program, is on the chopping block in Jackson, Clay, and Platte counties.

Head Start promotes school readiness via complementary early learning, health, nutrition, and family support services to low-income children from birth to age five. Eligibility is primarily based on income, but children in foster care, who are homeless, or whose families receive public assistance, qualify.

Among Kansas City’s Head Start parents, 1,351 are employed, 169 are in training programs, and 168 are enrolled in school.

October 17, Mid-America Regional Council (MARC) announced 17 Head Start sites in the Kansas City area, serving 2,300 children and their families, will close on November 1 unless the federal government reopens. The shutdown would also adversely affect 500 Head Start employees in Kansas City.

The Health and Human Services Department (HHS), which oversees Head Start, has also experienced numerous staffing cuts since the start of the year, as well as a recent effort to fire almost 1,000 employees at HHS, including almost 50 at the Administration of Children and Families.

Head Start funding has served nearly 40 million children since its start in 1965.

Head Start....the government babysitting service.

They have already concluded that Head Start doesn't make a difference in the long run. And they still persist.

I was wrong. I thought they would wait until next week to start starving the children.

A sign for the “No Kings” protest could read “More Debt!” Republicans and Democrats are responsible for the unsustainable debt, but the Democrats demands will increase the debt by $_____________ over _________ years.

Head star is a force. What is it been around 50 years and things are worse now amongst that demographic in fact, it may be 60 years.

Probably the reason it’s worse now is that the kids are offloaded to the government and parents spend their time drinking and doing drugs instead of learning to care for their children.

Could that be where the fatigue has come from?

What you said. Head Start is babysitting, and not very good at that. The alleged early gains slide back down to no gains by ages 6 and up. No gains.

The more the state does the parenting job, the less parenting the real parents actually do. Why would they bother? Daddy Government will do it for them.

Being kept from attending Head Start will only improve the lives of these children.

Head Start should be funded by state and local government if it exists at all. Education is not in the enumerated powers of the federal government in the Constitution.

A logical person would suggest the parents should not be having children they are unable to support.

I got into the Head Start Program for my daughter about 1865. It was totally different. It was half a day...once a week I think.

I went with her. The parents were all in one room and the children in the play area. It was NOT a babysitting service. It was kids getting along with kids.

But the neighborhood kids gave her the same learning experience so that was the end of that. And then she found herself with a brother,,,and then another brother.

Here we are about 60 years later and everyday...we (Mom and the 3 children) do wordle, connections and strands and send in our scores.

I'm in NY. The 2 boys are in Virginia and my daughter is in Cape Cod. We're a pretty amazing family.

Their father died 15 years ago.
