The new Gazan Board of Peace: Can it work?

When I first heard this news about the Board of Peace in Gaza, I felt some trepidation: Does Donald Trump need one more project to lead, given all that he’s doing in the U.S.? But the fact is, Trump is probably the best person to head this Board, and there are several reasons why. We don’t know many specifics about the plans for the Board, but we can identify the benefits of the organization and Trump’s role. Here’s what we do know at this point:

The Trump plan envisions a ‘Board of Peace’ of international overseers led by Trump himself and including former British Prime Minister Tony Blair in an undefined role. Gaza will be governed under the temporary transitional governance of a ‘technocratic, apolitical’ committee made up of Palestinians and international experts, to be overseen by the Board of Peace. This group will set the framework and handle the funding for the redevelopment of Gaza until the Palestinian Authority has undergone major reforms.

And why is Trump the ideal “chairman of this Board”?

First, Trump arguably has the most credibility among all the players in this process, more than any individual in the Middle East. He was a critical actor in the Abraham Accords, and has developed positive relationships with Saudi Arabia, the UAE, Bahrain, Jordan, Egypt, and Qatar.

Second, his experience of bringing peace to fighting countries was recently demonstrated with his intervention with Pakistan and India, Thailand and Cambodia, Armenia and Azerbaijan, Rwanda and the Democratic Republic of Congo, Serbia and Kosovo, Egypt and Ethiopia. Trump has also included Iran and Israel in his list, but his interaction with Iran following the destruction of its nuclear capability has been limited (at least publicly).

Every time I hear about possible peace in the middle east, I am reminded of 1 Thessalonians 5:3

“While people are saying, “There is peace and security,” then sudden destruction will come upon them as labor pains come upon a pregnant woman, and they will not escape.”

Because he is the only guy that doesn’t need the money so he has no motivation to rip off the people in Gaza. His motivation is build something that the people of Gaza can be proud of, have jobs, and not make war. That makes him perfect, because everybody else.....like the UN...and UNRWA...all profited from continued conflict.

Whether or not this works, only time will tell. But if the people of Gaza and the West Bank find themselves in peace, prosperity, and happiness, they might well decide to forego the idea of wiping Israel off the map, especially if they see that Israel is a big part of their peace, prosperity and happiness.

It is certainly in Israel’s interest to try and make this happen.

Political differences can be settled. For example, France and Britain put aside centuries of political differences. They are now friendly neighbors.

However, religious differences are not so easily settled. Muslim extremists want the complete destruction of Israel. Nothing less will do.

So, no. This latest peace agreement will not work. It’s just a lull in the fighting. But I suppose that will have to do.

I'm not holding my breath. Videos on Youtube show Hamas emerging from their tunnels, overrunning the territory that the IDF occupied, re-establishing their authority, and even executing "collaborators."

The IDF should have occupied every square inch of the Gaza Strip, as MacArthur did with Manila in 1945. Yes, it would have meant many more casualties, but it would have brought about an enduring peace by imposing the peace of the grave on Hamas.

frankly it is such utter BS that it cannot possibly do any good at all

why in the world it was felt useful to include such krapo garbage (UK!? Blair!??? Board of Peace???? PA for Heaven’s sales! there’s NO way on earth that the IDF fought two long years to install one Fakestinian terrorist murder gang instead of another, and it won’t be allowed

what utter rubbish this is. far far far far far beneath President Trump’s intellectural or ethical levels (both of which are pretty high, really)

don’t fret it, its just BS and will not be permitted to do any serious damage, come what may

I agree with this, only time will tell. Having an option for a career, other than training to torture, murder, and kill, would be a good start.
