Russian strikes in recent days have wiped out more than half of Ukraine’s domestic natural gas production, likely forcing the war-battered country to spend 1.9 billion euros ($2.2 billion) on fuel imports to survive the looming winter. Article content
Kyiv told its allies earlier this week that a massive Russian barrage targeting the Kharkiv and Poltava regions on Oct. 3 took out roughly 60% of the country’s gas production, according to people with knowledge of the matter. They requested anonymity because the discussions are private. Article content Article content Article content
Ukraine’s gas infrastructure — able to meet domestic demand before the Russian full-scale invasion — has come under increasingly intensive missile and drone strikes since the beginning of this year. Article content Article content
If the strikes continue, Ukraine expects it will need to buy roughly 4.4 billion cubic meters of gas by the end of March, at a cost of nearly 2 billion euros, according to people familiar with the details. That’s the equivalent of nearly 20% of Ukraine’s annual consumption. Article content
Since the attacks, Ukraine has made urgent appeals to its Group of Seven partners for equipment to repair its energy system and reiterated long-standing requests for more air defense systems to help protect energy infrastructure. It’s also seeking financial support to pay for the needed gas imports.
Gas is essential during the often harsh winters in Ukraine, where households rely almost entirely on the fuel for heating. Russia has targeted the country’s energy infrastructure every winter since its invasion in February of 2022 to erode the civilian population’s morale and support for resisting Moscow’s war.

Looks like they’ve been reading the posts from a zeeper saying Ukraine should strike Russia’s oil refineries to end the war.
It’s a war isn’t it?-/
Gee, guess who they want to pay for that imported gas.
What will EU Countries do?
Russia expands gasoline sale restrictions amid fuel shortages, refinery strikes

All Zelensky has to do is go on offense and take ALL HIS LAND BACK from
Ruzzia.
They can’t do that, Ukraine has a God-given right to oil, or something.
All Zelensky has to do is go on offense and take ALL HIS LAND BACK from Ruzzia.
He and Ukraine may do it.
Russia has been stymied so far.
President Trump is running out of patience with Russia’s unwillingness to end the war.
Ukraine says they have been close to winning a couple times, already, but Biden held them back for fear of escalation.
War is unpredictable. Wars which are in a stalement, such as the Ukraine/Russia war, can go either way with a technological change or other reason.
Ukraine has been pretty careful not to hit Russia “too hard” because Russia has nuclear weapons.
No one knows how this conflict will end.
Ukraine, as the defender of its territory, is more likely to withstand damage and keep fighting than Russia is.
Russia has more assets, more people, and a greater industrial capacity than Ukraine does.
Actually, what Russia is doing is a war crime. But, the entire war is a war crime.
How many thousands of Russians are dying each week? It warms my tummy.
“Russia has more assets, more people, and a greater industrial capacity than Ukraine does.”
True, but Russia’s economy has been ruined by Putin.
Russian losses are very low now. They have changed tactics.
Who prosecutes war crimes?
Accurate numbers:
Ukraine nat gas consumption 2024 was about 20 billion cubic meters. It was not a cold winter.
Ukraine gas production 2024 was 18.1 billion cubic meters. Essentially all of it from the northeast of the country.
The article says 60% of the annual production was wiped out. That would be 7.24 bcm/yr remaining. Probably optimistic.
And that would be 35% of annual consumption remaining as production.
This does not address storage, which would make the situation less desperate.
Note there are no LNG import terminals. Any gas they are to have must be via pipeline east to west from Kharkiv/Poltava area. Or if they are to tap Poland or Romania, west to east pipelines.
I may not know how it will end, but I exactly know how it will not end. Neither Russia nor Ukraine will win. Sure, both will claim some semblance of victory, but it is a war none can win. No matter how pro-Russia or pro-Ukraine someone is.
Also, it is a war that will continue to suck deep from both countries. The only victors from the war will be China and the US. European countries like Germany have already suffered a lot economically, and as for Russia and Ukraine, they’re already so deep in the red (be it blood or economics) that they may never recover.
For example, the demographic hit on both countries (far worse for Ukraine, with its smaller population and analyses that show it may never recover) is beyond horrible. Same thing when it comes to the economies (this time worse for Russia as the war economy thing can only continue for so long).
Both countries should regret that President DJT was not president from 2020. It is very true that if he was the war would never have happened, and the worst than would have occurred is the usual hate each country has for the other rather than the utter destruction we see there today.
My only hope is they don’t drag the rest of the world into their silliness. I know some say Putin would never nuke Ukraine. I say that he will absolutely nuke Ukraine if Zelenskyy fires 100+ Tomahawks and 150 locally made Flamingoes into Russia. Now, I doubt that will happen as I doubt President Trump will actually give Ukraine Tomahawks, so it is most likely a moot point. However, I am not one of those who thinks Putin cannot nuke Ukraine.
If he did, what would happen to him? More sanctions? He doesn’t care about such things. It is also clear that no Western leader will authorize military retaliation against Russia in the event of a nuclear strike (on Ukraine). No German Chancellor or French president or British prime minister will ever be willing to trade Berlin or Paris or London for Ukraine.
And I think both Putin and Zelenskyy are crazier than any Western leader. Zelenskyy has nothing to lose and everything to gain if the West get more involved in the war; and Putin knows that Russianhas zero chance against the West in a conventional war, and thus a situation where 100+ Tomahawks are being launched into Russia well exceeds their nuclear trigger for a limited tactical strike (against Ukraine).
So, since real negotiations seem impossible, the best case scenario is both of those countries continuing to bleed each other white for two or so more years. At that point either Putin or Zelenskyy will exit the stage, and then maybe the next leaders will be more sane.
Maybe.
I think this is almost laughable. It wouldn't even require nuclear weapons to turn Ukraine into a stinking hell-hole of radioactivity that no one could live in. Ukraine has 6 nuclear reactors that could be smacked open like eggs. This would just be with conventional weapons.
It is clear that Russia doesn't want this - and neither does Ukraine.
You are all missing the most important question of this story. How will it affect the incomes of Hunter and Joe Biden?

“Ukraine has been pretty careful not to hit Russia “too hard” because Russia has nuclear weapons.”
This wins the most hysterical comment of the week.
The only victors from the war will be China and the US.

Freeze all their Normie citizens.
Aristocrats and Degenerates have no worries.
