House Minority Leader Hakeem Jeffries (D-NY) rejected a one-year extension of Obamacare subsidies, which Breitbart News has reported that Democrats essentially shut down the government over.
The Hill reported that while Rep. Jen Kiggans (R-VA) is advocating for legislation that would “extend enhanced Affordable Care Act tax credit” until the end of 2026, Jeffries criticized Republicans for thinking “Democrats are going to go along with a one-year extension” of the Affordable Care Act (ACA) subsidies:
Rep. Jen Kiggans (R-Va.) is pushing legislation to extend enhanced Affordable Care Act tax credits, which expire on Jan. 1, through the end of 2026. The proposal has bipartisan support, and some political observers view it as a launching pad for securing a deal to reopen the government.
Jeffries, though, has other ideas, saying a one-year extension is “a non-starter.” He emphasized that President Trump and Republicans had adopted a permanent extension of tax cuts for the country’s wealthiest people earlier in the year. With that in mind, he’s demanding a similarly permanent extension of the enhanced ACA subsidies, which overwhelmingly help working class people.
“What world are these MAGA extremists living in right now to think that Democrats are going to go along with a one-year extension from a group of people, meaning the Republicans, who just permanently extended massive tax breaks for their billionaire donors?” Jeffries told reporters in the Capitol.

This is beautifully played by the Republicans!!!!
The left is playing MTG.
They want their slush fund back and nothing but that will make them sign on.
Don’t give the RATS anything. The pubbies will eventually cave, they always do.
Any Democrat who votes for it will get a primary challenger
If the cuts to HC subsidies could be blamed on Republicans why as a political move, wouldn't Democrats let it happen then run on it in 26?
It ends with Chuckie ranting we must stand firm, behind the scenes he allows others to peel off. But who else can vote for it and not be injured by their base?
This shutdown is total political grandstanding to supposedly “put it to Trump”. An extremely high risk move born of Trump Derangement Syndrome. They actually believe the president and Republicans will be blamed. Insanity.
I can’t wait until this blows up in their faces, but the GOP needs to stand firm against the onslaught of propaganda that’s surely coming.
Start the layoffs. Make him squeal.
What a liar.
Trumps BBB made the tax cuts of 2017 permanent which benefits ALL taxpayers. Look at your tax tables before 2017 and after.
I say all Americans but in reality, only about 50% of us even pay any meaningful federal tax. Guess that makes us “ the rich”
If Trump tax tables had expired, taxes on all Americans would have increased by $3.2 TRILLION…democrats mourn this loss of income. The CBO calls it “ spending” and adds it to the deficit.
String them along. We need time, so this is useful.
They are risking a lot for an eventual throwing in of the towel...but they don’t seem to know it.
What am I missing here?
Time to start a new tradition. At Free Republic whenever a story by Maureen Dowd is posted a picture of Catherine Zeta-Jones is posted. Since this article is about Hakeem Jeffries, I think I’ll post this. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=PBa-UZ3-lvg
Hakeem has just proved that it’s never about whatever thing they say it is. Rather, it’s about maintaining the narrative or the dialectic or some such Marxist BS they believe will pull the wool over the most people’s eyes so they can execute their larger scheme.
Less than 10% of the airports in the US have control tower operations. Of those, half close tower and ground, turning operations over to regional centers and pilot control. The runway lights and beacons are turned on by the arriving pilot. You key your microphone five times rapidly, and the whole place lights up. Most pilots prefer those hours of operation.
Airports central to class B airspace are open 24 hours. That's maybe two or three per state on average.
“Medicare Premium Bill....Current Premium Due...Total Amount Due $555.00 by 10/25/2025”
That’s from a document that came on the 6th.
That’s $185/month.
I want to see:
FAIR SHARE PPACA PREMIUM MINIMUMS
1. 2% of the Medicare premium amount per insured year of age as of the start of coverage
2. a percentage of the premium amount equal to the household income percentage of FPL - 60% divided by 3
For a 5-year-old, 7-year-old, 32-year-old and 34-year-old, the ages would sum to 88 and the monthly absolute minimum premium amount would be a (88/65)*$185 or $250.46.
For a 5-year-old kid and a 27-year-old mom the ages would sum to 32 and the monthly absolute minimum premium amount would be (32/65)*$185 or $91.07.
To make the minimums palatable to the Democrats, I would lower the original PPACA subsidy threshold from 100% of FPL to 80% of FPL.
And I know lots of you want reasonably priced coverage.
AFFORDABILITY
Silver plans would be limited to a maximum deductible of three times the Medicare Part A amount [2025: $1676].
I would also make bronze plans low cost by having co-insurance up to $10,000 at up to 50% with the policy upfront amount paid up front to the insurance company by the insured. Policy percentages would normally be 20% and based on the Medicare amounts unless contractually specified otherwise. Policy percentages might be less for certain things and contractually capped by time periods, by say 50% of the upfront amount the first three months of the calendar year, 60% the first six months of the calendar year, 70% the first eleven months of the calendar year and the whole amount the whole calendar year. If and how an upfront amount would get invested would be subject to contract. Unused amounts of upfront money would be refunded after each policy is closed out. A policy would not be closed out until the time allowed for claim submission has expired.
I would also make copper plans low cost by only covering Part A scope items plus what Part B would pay for any general or regional anesthesia surgery. These would be like the Blue Cross/Blue Shield plans of my youth.
I would allow Federal PPACA exchanges to offer Interstate Class Drug Plans,
exempt from state control that cover under contract at the time of policy issue at least:
1. 80% of all FDA-approved recombinant drugs by key active entity
2. 80% of all key FDA breakthrough chemical active entities under patent as of January 1 of the coverage year
used in a drug approved by the FDA by August 1 prior
3. 80% of all key chemical active entities under patent as of January 1 of the coverage year
used in a drug approved by the FDA by August 1 prior
4. 90% of all WHO “essential” drugs
This system would allow for genuine negotiation between drug plans and drug companies. Drug plans would have an incentive to try to buy drugs from drug companies and drug companies would have an incentive to make deals to make sales.
In-plan drugs would be supplied at on an all-the doctors prescribe basis. The co-pays would be roughly equal to mere manufacturing cost. Out-of-plan drugs need not be covered at all.
My new bronze, copper and Interstate Class Drug Plans would be for higher income folks and would not be PPACA subsidy eligible.
The pubbies will eventually cave, they always do”
Rep. Jen Kiggans (R-Va.) is pushing legislation to extend enhanced Affordable Care Act tax credits. How about HELL NO.
This isn’t the time to take up healthcare. Can’t believe they offered the extension.
ACA IS NOT AFFORDABLE
IT IS NOT CARE
IT IS AN EXPENSIVE ABOMINATION
IT HAS DISTORTED HEALTH “CARE” IN THE USA BEYOND RECOGNITION
“YOU HAVE TO PASS IT TO READ IT”
WORST MOVE CONGRESS EVER MADE
IT WAS NOT DESIGNED TO CARE FOR MILLIONS OF INTRUDERS, EITHER
In this, they are correct. That is, after all, how it works. Republican President = Republicans fault. Democrat President = Republican's fault. Doesn't matter what is true or not. This is how it works.
That, and the right has one helluva ability to snatch defeat from the jaws of victory.
“In 2023 and 2024, 80 percent of marketplace enrollees could find a plan for $10 or less per month on HealthCare.gov, the federal marketplace that operates in 31 states (19 states and the District of Columbia run their own marketplaces).”
“The enhanced subsidies have translated into higher enrollment in ACA marketplace plans and fewer uninsured people. They helped increase enrollment in the marketplaces from 12 million in 2021 to a record 24.2 million in 2025.”
“Medicare Premium Bill....Current Premium Due...Total Amount Due $555.00”
$10 or less for them, $185 for me
The ratio reminds me of the “Taxman” song.
YOU are paying for THEM..................
