Russia targets Ukraine's natural gas facilities in biggest attack of the war

Russia launched its biggest attack of the war overnight against natural gas facilities run by Ukraine’s state-owned Naftogaz Group, officials said Friday.

Russia fired a total of 381 drones and 35 missiles at Ukraine, according to Ukraine’s air force. in what officials was an attempt to wreck the Ukrainian power grid ahead of winter and wear down public appetite for the 3-year-old conflict.

“This is deliberate terror against civilian facilities that provide gas extraction and processing for the normal life of people,” Serhii Koretskyi, chief executive of Ukraine’s state-owned gas company Naftogaz, said in a statement. “It has no military purpose. This is yet another act of Russian malice aimed solely at disrupting the heating season and depriving Ukrainians of warmth in winter.”

Russia has recently escalated its strikes on the power grid, as well as on Ukraine’s rail network, which is essential for military transport.

Cry me a river.

Isn’t this purportedly a “war”?

“This is deliberate terror against civilian facilities that provide gas extraction and processing for the normal life of people,”

These facilities are close to the front lines, a lot closer than some of the energy facilities Ukraine has targeted in Russia.

That would be like if Russia targeted the US Capitol Building.

I agree, legitimate target, war is war, however😂, I do love how pitin has been doing this for years and when it finally started happening to Russia it is terrorism.

For 3+ years Ukraine has found a way to keep the lights on…., curious to see how Russia handles general winter when the shoe is on the other foot

Just a guess, but imagine Russia is in a far worse position when it comes to maintenance, and rebuilding in general, but specifically from “falling debris “

Some facts:

Ukraine’s electricity grid has in just the past few months been 65 percent destroyed.

Ukraine’s NG energy pipelines are now effectively destroyed in the East. I expect Vlad to fully destroy western Ukrainian NG if they keep up the game.

It will be interesting to see if the EU will be able to handle the estimated 5 million plus more fleeing, frozen Ukrainians….the Ukie war cheerleaders somehow call that winning.

Up next on Vlad’s chopping block? The dozen bridges across the Dniepner, at a time of his choosing.

In item of significance.

I have been told that the Euroclear custodial arrangement of frozen Russian assets continues to present an obstacle to outright seizure by the hardline Euro types.

The media is phrasing this as “Euroclear is concerned that the Russians can file lawsuits with considerable merit about these assets and the various contortions underway declaring money taken to be loans to Ukraine, repayment of which would not be required until Russia pays reparations.

The lawsuits in question have been presumed to file in the Hague, where an impartial ruling is unlikely.

But . . . new development. There are apparently some Russian filings of lawsuits already in place in Hong Kong and Singapore. Since Euroclear’s declared concern is choice by other countries to refuse to deposit money with them henceforth. At first glance, this did not seem to be a problem.

The second glance is that the money that Euroclear is talking about attracting is Asian money, that is, China. Lawsuits in Hong Kong requiring Euroclear to disperse the money might not get compliance if the EU can somehow obstruct it. But accessing that money will likely be obstructed by Euroclear if they face these Asian lawsuits.

For 3+ years Ukraine has found a way to keep the lights on
——————————-
You can thank Vlad for his restraint, he is now starting to “tighten the screws”.

“ AI:

“ The Ukrainian electrical grid has faced significant destruction due to sustained Russian military attacks, particularly during the ongoing conflict that escalated in 2022. By 2024, approximately 65% of Ukraine’s energy production capacity was reported destroyed, leading to widespread blackouts and severe challenges for the country’s infrastructure and economy.

Impact of Cyberattacks on Ukraine’s Electrical Grid
Overview of Cyberattacks
Ukraine’s electrical grid has faced significant threats from cyberattacks, particularly during the ongoing conflict with Russia. Notable incidents include:
2015 BlackEnergy Attack: This was one of the first known cyberattacks to cause a blackout, affecting a fifth of Kyiv’s population.
Industroyer Malware: In 2016 and again in 2022, this malware was used to target the power grid, demonstrating the integration of cyber and kinetic attacks.
Consequences of Attacks
The cyberattacks have led to severe disruptions in Ukraine’s energy infrastructure:
Damage Estimates: By mid-2024, damage to the electric power sector exceeded $11.4 billion, with restoration costs projected to approach $30 billion.
Operational Challenges: Approximately 65% of Ukraine’s energy production capacity was destroyed due to sustained military attacks, complicating recovery efforts.
Current State of the Grid
As of late 2024, the situation remains critical:
Infrastructure Damage: Half of all high-voltage substations have sustained damage, severely impacting the distribution network.
Emergency Measures: Cities like Kyiv and Odesa have implemented contingency plans to maintain essential services during potential blackouts.
These cyberattacks highlight the vulnerabilities of critical infrastructure and the need for enhanced cybersecurity measures...”

Restraint, apparently he is restraining his air defenses, and frontline troops.

As for cyber attacks, may want to check in with Aeroflot 😂

3+ years and approaching the amount of time Soviet Union fought nazi germany(after starting war allied with Germany) and the “restraint” narrative is still alive and well😂😂

The West has no idea what an “ SMO” is. Hope the Russian Congress ( Duma) doesn’t pass a Declaration of War….which will fully mobilize their Army.

“””””For 3+ years Ukraine has found a way to keep the lights on….””””””

Probably a very important untold story is what America/NATO and our global allies are learning from that 3.5 years of studying the damage and watching the repair and recovery of those utility systems.

“No military purpose” for energy infrastructure in an enemy area?

Yeah, sure sport. That is 100% standard ops for us when we attack a country.

Gee Whiz, Hanna Arhirova, the Associated Presstitutes, and ABC Noose need a box of tissues.

Maybe the EU can send 'em some.

Very much so, the world is learning and as the arrow led to the gun, the battleship to aircraft carrier, the Calvary charge to the tank…. How wars are fought changes

We have evolved technologically, but as humans we are basically still beasts

I think “the west” has a pretty good idea what a SMO/SVO is.

As for full declaration of war and mobilization, I think pitin fears that more than we do, and has ordered up a load of motorcycles, golf carts, and mules

I was thinking more on the nuts and bolts of how to keep grids alive, learning what is needed, what is hard to find, what is in short supply, what needs to be stored in case of war, the effects on modern cities and populations and what helps them when power is gone, a lot of in depth study and practical experience, and of course how to maximize the methods and effects of attacking enemy grids.
