Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth’s assertion Tuesday that newly proposed military fitness standards may exclude women from certain combat roles has reignited fears about his approach to women in the armed forces.
In a highly unusual address to hundreds of the military’s top leaders in Quantico, Va., Hegseth declared new directives to ensure every combat position “returns to the highest male standard” of their service’s physical fitness test.
“If that means no women qualify for some combat jobs, so be it,” he said, though he stressed that the military will continue to welcome women into its ranks.
“I don’t want my son serving alongside troops who are out of shape, or in combat units with females who can’t meet the same combat arms physical standards as men,” he said. “This job is life and death. Standards must be met.”
The comments — which hearken back to statements he made last year that nearly upended his nomination — sparked fresh concerns that Hegseth seeks to force out female troops under the guise of combat readiness. They also perplexed female veterans, as combat roles are already subject to gender-neutral standards.
“It seems to me that really that what he’s asking for, what he wants to happen, is already how it works,” said Elisa Cardnell, chief executive officer of the nonprofit Service Women’s Action Network and a Navy veteran who served aboard a destroyer in the Persian Gulf.
“Women have been allowed to be in combat roles, in all roles now, since 2016. In that time, those standards have always been gender neutral for combat roles,” she added. “They were never lowered when women were offered the opportunity to join those career paths.”

At a pilot training base in the ‘80s just after the academies let girls in, the girl pilots were lean, mean and the guys expressed no problem with their abilities. Hub was a classic he man woman hater from an academy and never said girls could not fly
Ten years later the girls were freaking fat. A fat girl in a flight suit screams D.E.I.
I’m a girl vet. Not in a classic guys’ role so it’s immaterial. I did my job.
People talk about relaxed standards for decades.
Why throw the controversy in?
Hegseth is saying what normal people have been saying. Qualify. Get in. Continue to qualify
There are some roles that require male only qualifications. Upper body strength will never match.
Boys don’t fight to get into girls only roles. It’s. Satire of the beast. But girls should own it.
Nature of the beast.
Auto c doesn’t like that
Let’s get real or do we want to keep living in Feminist Fantasy Land.
China and Russia do not live there as I see it.
Leftist tools are so completely ignorant. And any beta-cuck former any male in combat arms that say women can do it; are as good as treasonous scum. They are liars and putting lives at risk. Piss be upon them!
.@SecWar announces new directives to ensure that every military Combat MOS and Combat Arms position will return "to the highest male standard only — because this job is life or death."

We have women’s sports so that females can participate in sports, because they would be totally eliminated and shut out if we only had “sports”, now apply that to war.

There Is Nothin’ Like A Dame—
—Rodgers and Hammerstein
Lots of things in life are beautiful, but, brother,
There is one particular thing that is nothin’ whatsoever in any way, shape, or form like any other.
There is nothin’ like a dame—
Nothin’ in the world!
There is nothin’ you can name
That is anythin’ like a dame.
Nothin’ else is built the same!
Nothin’ in the world—
Has a soft and wavy frame
Like the silhouette of a dame.
This is not what the Secretary said, or at best it is a mischaracterization of what he said. He said that every combat position “returns to the highest male standard” of their service’s physical fitness test. The standard applies to combat positions only. Some smaller, lighter framed men will not meet the standard, and some larger, stouter framed women will, but on average, most men will and most women won't qualify for combat positions.
This Broadway theater geek likes 👍 your comment. 😊
Woman HAVE proven to be among the best A-10 Warthog pilots. Maybe it has something to do with pitilessly obliterating men from above with a monstrous machine gun.
My humble thanks.
Now the catchy tune is going around in my head.
I knew an A-10 warthog combat pilot. Very well. Central casting. No problem flying with good pilots who were girls. Period
Can we bin the various “Wymyn” Cis, Queer and Trans numbers vs. the various action categories?
Both sexes have a wide distribution of abilities and proclivities along no shortage of axes.
When the tails of the distributions have low overlaps, should the sexes be mixed in various parts of The Miltary?
Is this a lie that standards were “never lowered”? It flies in the face of common sense.
How about all nations create a “Woman War League”? Maybe the UN can lead this.
Absolutely everything Hegseth said is just plain common sense. That’s why they hate it so.
I think I see her problem.
Women have their roles. The military is not one of them. I shudder to think what women would have ‘added’ to our up-close and personal firefights against the NVA.
