Russia warns of escalation risk if US sends Tomahawk missiles to Ukraine

MOSCOW (Reuters) -Russia said on Monday that its military was analysing whether or not the United States would supply Tomahawk cruise missiles to Ukraine for strikes deep into Russia, a step that Russian officials say could trigger a steep escalation.

U.S. Vice President JD Vance said on Sunday that Washington was considering a Ukrainian request to obtain Tomahawks.

President Donald Trump has not made a final decision, and he has been wary of escalating the Ukraine war into a direct confrontation with Russia. But the fact he is now weighing such a move shows the extent of his frustration with President Vladimir Putin's refusal to agree a ceasefire since he hosted the Russian leader at a summit in Alaska last month.

Tomahawks have a range of 2,500 km (1,550 miles) - easily far enough to hit Moscow and most of European Russia if fired from Ukraine. Ukraine's President Volodymyr Zelenskiy cautioned Kremlin officials last week that they should "know where the bomb shelters are".

At least until/unless I am proven wrong by events I contend this is a feint/bluff.

I do not believe our POTUS is that stupid.

It's impossible to game out with any certainty what the result would be, and there are scenarios that incinerate the whole western and eastern worlds.

Putin is testing all of the limits for all of the Western powers. He is sending military hardware over the airspace of multiple neighbors, in violation of numerous laws and treaties. Apparently he is now getting brave enough to test Pres Trump. The Left has taken to calling him "TACO", short for "Trump Always Chickens Out". This may have emboldened Putin even more.

Hopefully Poland and a few former Soviet Satellites all just invade Russia at once, and put this nonsense leadership to rest. If they cannot take on Ukraine 1-on-1, they won't be able to handle any sort of coordinated effort among multiple medium-powers... especially if the Russian population understands that it isn't an invasion for land or resources, but only for wiping out the militaristic nuts in charge.

That’s a STRONK-ly worded statement.

I do not believe our POTUS is that stupid.

For his first 4 years, Trump had around him people who were back-stabbers and RINO/Deep state plants, in the key deep-state positions that mattered - people like Bolton, Sessions, Barr, Esper, Wray, etc...

While it seem things have improved in 2025, one sometimes wonders what information he gets.

Putin could end his fiasco today by the simple expedient of removing his army from Ukraine.

Russia is escalating the war by rebuffing the peace deal. When everybody thought that Russia was fighting a defensive war people were on their side. Now that it has been exposed as a war of aggression and not just toward Ukraine, things have changed. Russia has gone loco and will be stopped.

“one sometimes wonders what information he gets”

I expect a POTUS who knows what he wants, and directs that in his subordinates.

Unfortunately, the Russian people have no real say in the matter.

It is peculiar how people state, out of one side of their mouth, that Putin is a totalitarian dictator and then state, out of the other side of their mouth, that Russian people have a say.

it appears that in this case, the neocons are gaining influence with DJT.

It would be beyond stupid to give Ukraine Tomahawks.

I never realized that Tomohawk is a Navy missile.
We have land launch systems to sell as well?

“We have land launch systems to sell as well?”

Yes, and we removed them from Europe completely by 1991 along with Pershing II, as part of the INF Treaty.

Since foolishly abandoned and violated by both parties.

The Treaty’s Demise

Violations:
Starting in 2014, the U.S. accused Russia of violating the treaty by developing banned missile systems, while Russia denied these claims.

U.S. Withdrawal:
In response to Russia’s alleged non-compliance, the U.S. formally withdrew from the treaty in 2019.
Russian Response:
Russia also stated it no longer considered itself bound by the INF Treaty due to perceived threats from NATO and the U.S.

Assuming we did this—which would be insane—keep in mind that whatever is sent will be regarded by Zylynskyy as a grant, or gift.

Putin could de-escalate this by withdrawing his troops from Ukraine.

Noooo.... Trump! You can't make it a fair fight.

Meanwhile, Russia can ask for and receive help from its allies (China, No. Korea, Iran and others) and we're not supposed to help our friend.

If Hitler had asked the U.S. to not escalate the war and not join the Europeans during WWII, we would be speaking a combination of Japanese and German, and English would be banned.

Putin is a moron, but not moron enough to dare use the nuke buttons. He has nukes, but so does NATO/U.S. Nukes from Russia would mean the end of Russia, permanently.

Why frame it in terms of a fair fight?

It’s not a fair fight in the Caribbean/Venezuela either.

It’s just countries pursuing what they perceive to be their best interests.
