Suicide has overtaken cancer as the main cause of death among South Koreans in their forties for the first time since records began in 1983, amid growing concerns that the country is facing a mental health crisis.
The country recorded 14,872 suicides last year – a 6.3 per cent rise from the previous year and the highest figure since 2011 – according to the latest “2024 Cause of Death Statistics” published by Statistics Korea on Thursday.
While suicide has long been the leading cause of death among teenagers and people under 30, it became the top cause of death among those in their forties for the first time in 2024.

Observers have also flagged the so-called “Werther effect” – a phenomenon in which public figures’ suicides trigger a spike in copycat cases, particularly among those in similar demographics. The term takes its name from Johann Wolfgang von Goethe’s 18th-century novel The Sorrows of Young Werther, in which the protagonist dies by suicide.

I have read Japan has a high rate of suicides, perhaps not from same issue. I wonder if it has anything to do with culture making it acceptable and I’ve often wondered if you could bring someone back would the do that again.
But cancer is a terrible thing and i’m sorry so many are getting cancer.

I believe the suicide rate in Japan is lower than South Korea.
I found this distinction interesting.

I think Karaoke is equally popular in Japan, Korea and the Philippines, though what venues for it are most popular may differ.
