Republicans guaranteed a shutdown this fall when they sided with Trump

Allowing the president to cut congressionally approved spending soured Democrats.

In March, 10 Senate Democrats gave Republicans the votes they needed to avoid a government shutdown. What the GOP did afterward guaranteed they won’t do that again lightly.

Democrats reasoned the last time that the timing was wrong for a big fight with Trump, who was just a month into his second term, and they didn’t yet have a unifying demand to organize a shutdown around.

Two things then happened. The Democratic grassroots responded angrily, telling their representatives that they wanted them to fight back against Trump harder. And Republicans continued caving to Trump.

A key moment came when Trump used rescission — essentially breaking the law passed by Congress directing him to spend money on certain programs, including the Corporation for Public Broadcasting — and then asked Republican lawmakers to pass a bill giving him the OK after the fact.

Democrats tell me that the GOP’s decision to go along with rescission meant they were disregarding all of the bipartisan work that had gone into those spending bills.

“When Democrats did the responsible thing, Republicans just kind of threw it in our face,” an aide to a Senate Democrat who voted for the continuing resolution in March told me this week. “Republicans had an opportunity to do the right thing, but they chose to side with Trump on rescissions and turn their backs on bipartisan spending agreements.”

That set us on the path to a shutdown in the coming weeks.

Since the summer, senior Democrats have met to talk through how to take a stand when the next funding deadline comes. But they aren’t just angry. They also see Trump’s sinking approval numbers and low ratings for the One Big Beautiful Bill Act, his signature legislative accomplishment. In other...

Of course GOP will side with their President, Dems do when their party is in power. It is up to the left to come over to our side or the shut down is on them - They are just trying to spin it

Good. I can remember many times when the democrats simply ignored their side of agreements; the amnesty deal in the 80’s for example when they pulled all the agreed extra border funding right after they got their amnedty for illegals.

Republicans and others siding with Trump on cutting spending on programs like medical benefits to illegals…about 77 million and over 300 electoral votes

Excellent. Let it shut down. We have the executive at the moment.

The left can own shutting the government down, and we shall dictate the terms to them, and they will learn to love it.

“”””They also see Trump’s sinking approval numbers and low ratings””””

Among Democrat politicians in DC that is probably true. For the rest of the country including Democrat voters, people are pleased with Trump 47.

MSNBC or is it MSNOW is incarcerated in their Echo Chamber.

This makes Trump look in-charge and the Republicans look like geniuses.

I think the MSM lost the thread.

The Democratic grassroots responded angrily, telling their representatives that they wanted them to fight back against Trump harder. And Republicans continued caving to Trump.

A saner news source would say that the Democrats buckled under to their noisy and increasingly terroristic radical left while Trump and the MAGA movement put a little steel in the Republicans' notoriously floppy spines.

They can blame it on Republicans (they always do) and Trump, but that won’t make it so.

Saying it is the Republicans fault is like saying I am racist. It has no effect any longer. Same with saying President Trumps approval ratings are down. I don’t believe anything they say any longer and just assume everything they say is the opposite of what they say.
